Possible New build, would like thoughts...

Featured Replies

I came across a really good deal or I think it is ($375 for everything listed) and was wondering your thoughts on the hardware....Reason for new build is I had a drive fail in WHS and lost 1TB, would like something a little more safe.

Tyan Thunder i7520 Motherboard

Thoughts or comments?

Surplus servers like that can rock.

I like ECC RAM.

Redundant power, too.

Possible oddball board, unless you know otherwise.

Xeon/board overkill and high power consumption.

Enterprise-y parts can be unusual and/or expensive to replace.

At the right price, if it doesn't work for some reason you can turn it without much/any loss.

We are phasing out Rackables at work...

Those things are loud and suck a lot of electricity.  Rackables are designed for datacenters where noise is not an issue.

Keep in mind that server was probably made for server 2000. You might not find modern windows drivers for it. I'm not sure about unraid support. that's going to be the real question. (funny thing is, it would probably run WHSv1 fine since it is 2003 based, doubtful on 2008)

That server has probably been on 24x7 for the last 8+ years. it has probably seen its better days.

I think those are sata1 cards as i recall (i could be wrong, i am often). they "should" be fine with 2tb drives but I'm unsure of 3tb.

Must of the noise will be that power supply, as i recall you cant fit a standard silent PS into that case.

it is up to you, but unless the deal is super awsome and you have done a little research. you might consider something a little newer. possibly quieter if for the home. saving money in the end

Thanks for the insights so far....I updated the OP with motherboard specs....and price of this deal... I currently have a dual xeon home build....PC-DL Deluxe...so I know how loud they can be....It is the 16 rack case that is nice here....

Yeah that is it....Would unraid work on it?

Sorry, but it is such an obscure motherboard that I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you if it will work or not.  You get to decide if it is worth gambling on...

I am a firm believer to each his own. But FYI Xeon's (and ECC memory) are over kill unless your looking to run a VMware product and virtulize unRAID, which may not even work if the gear is to old. So you will be pay a higher electric bill for something thats just not needed.
