unRAID loses network connection when connected to gigabit switch

Featured Replies

Joe,

Try

ethtool eth0

Do any of you have multiple nics in your box?  In my testing, I have had unRAID grab different nics on different boots.  I have a Tyan board with 2 built in 10/100 ports, and a PCI realtek GigE card.  One time unRAID grabbed the GigE card, but now it seems to want to grab one of the 10/100 ports all of the time.  I have the built-in motherboard ethernet disabled in BIOS, but Linux doesn't seem to care about that.  I have tryed booting up with the cable in different ports, and can't reproduce the GigE card getting chosen.

Start your own thread... you'll get more support that way.

Joe,

Try

ethtool eth0

I know... I was just responding to the question of "does ethtool exist in unraid"

root@Tower:/boot# ethtool eth0

Settings for eth0:

Sorry, I just thought someone may have had multiple nics causing perceived 'disconnect' problems due to unRAID changing the nic it was using, and I ended up turning it into a support question.

ethtool eth0

I'll have to give that a try as I plug the unRAID into different ports on the switch. Don't know what I'm looking for, but I'll post what it shows, and see if any of you all can shine some light on the situation.

Decided after I ran it on the current port that I didn't have the desire and gumption to run it through all the ports - unRAID's working perfectly as is, and I can deal with the quirk. If someone posts and is really interested, I will try to make time to run through all of them and post it here, but if no-one else is curious, I'm fine with letting things lie now...

Well - there were two power outages, and I had to switch the port for unraid again after the first outage, but then it was rock steady, and then there was a second outage and it happened again when the power returned. So, I dutifully tried all the ports, to the same effects as previously described (works when not on Gb switch, breaks when on it). This time I ran ethtool on each port after reboot (while it still worked), and after it stopped working. It was unchanged, no matter the port or the state (working or not). Here's ethtool's output:

Settings for eth0:

Supported ports: [ TP ]

Supported link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full

100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full

1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full

Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full

1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full

Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes

Speed: 1000Mb/s

Duplex: Full

Port: Twisted Pair

PHYAD: 0

Transceiver: internal

Auto-negotiation: on

Supports Wake-on: pg

Wake-on: d

Current message level: 0x000000ff (255)

Don't know if you all see anything weird there? Anyhow, I'm poking around the ports again to see if there's another magic stable combination this time. I hope it's something in the software, otherwise I'm stuck doing this everytime the power goes out (only twice this last year, but still...). Anyhow, it doesn't seem likely to me that it's the switch or a particular port on the switch, given that the magic combo seems to change...

Hmm, I seem to have found it again. A completely different port works this time. However, ethtool now reports the speed as 100Mb/s. I'll post after a reboot with whether it's sticking at 100Mb/s, or if it's ever grabbing 1000Mb/s in this combo of ports.

Alrighty - after a reboot, ethtool still comes up with 100Mb/s, so my guess is that the connection is only working when the switch detects it as a lower-speed connection, which it was probably doing when it was working in the past. Looking at the front of the switch, the connection light for unraid is orange (100Mb/s), so on another day, I'm going to try plugging in random things to get it up and running at 1000Mb/s, but we'll see if it's just unworkable.
