hello, new user on 4.7 (noob questions about alarm and wd20ears)

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm French and i appologies for my very poor English

i'm testing 4.7 basic (3 hdd) for 2 days now and I also search in the forum this 2 days, somes questions had no answers

and I have difficulties to find my answers :(

So I d' like before make a BIG THANKS to Lime Tech and it's VERY GOOD UNRAID SOFT, and a great thanks to the community

I'll buy the version for 6 HDD soon as understand how UNRAID is working

my questions are :

1- How Unraid "say there is a problem with a Hard drive, Array, or any thing working wrong

beep? (i saw that by the 4.5 version it could use beeper, or buzzer sound like r2d2 ^^)

how does it work? i bought a brazos asus e35M1-M Pro no buzzer on it, and my old tower dont have any integrated speaker

if i plug a walkman speaker in the integrated sound card, does it work?

does UNRAID beep code when it encounter a problem?

Today I manage to make a email alert by search on the forum HOW TO procede. but I think for me that sound alert is better than email (I check my email  only 3 times a week)

2- By surf on the forum I saw (randomly) that there is a problem with wd20ears some thing like jumper problem, sorry, I read all posts and I don't understand anything, my Wd20ears don't have any physical jumper. . . does my unraid server explode if I put my WD20ears in the array?

have I some thing to do before add this HDD?

I hope someone could  answers my questions, I know that is boaring to read another post which had already answers on the forum, but I really search for 2 day and I already solves many problem

I said I m bad at English, could you use basic words and sentences please

Big thanks anyway

bordo new futur user :)

ps: My firts impressions use Unraid:

I made a array 3 Hdd

1- parity

2- one movies

3 - four Movies

I unplug hdd N°3

and the four films still be accessible! really great soft! (any raid5 solution couldn't bring this quality of service. but Unraid I don't know how Unraid will notify me the missing hdd)

Not sure about the beep sorry as I use email notifications.

It wasn't a big problem with the jumper, had to do with advanced format drives and all it would do was affect performance a little.

This had some info but if you search advanced format you should find a bit more.

Thx Joshpond :)

my 2nd question had a answer!

I apparently undertand your second link, it seems your link pass throught my research ^^

I'll carefully read this, thanks!

Hey,

You can plug in any solid state speaker into the motherboard header "Speaker". Should work without problems, just type beep in the command line.

I'm working on a plugin for Version 5 beta which will send email notifications, and allow you to set it to beep if it detects an issue. Keep an eye out in the user customizations forum.

Thx Speeding_ant

I'll keep an eye on V5b

I'll successfuly install unmenu. . . great! lots of tabs added  ;D and I may only understand 2 or 3 of them xD

For my wd20ears I read the very good post http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11842.0

but "1. If you buy a new EARS drive, do not install jumpers.  Preclear the disk.  Make sure preclear tells you it will align the partition at sector 64."

In unMenu I have :

HDParm Info for /dev/sda WDC_WD20EARS-00M_WD-WCAZA5804131

/dev/sda:

ATA device, with non-removable media

Model Number:       WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0

Serial Number:      WD-WCAZA5804131

Firmware Revision:  51.0AB51

Transport:          Serial, SATA 1.0a, SATA II Extensions, SATA Rev 2.5, SATA Rev 2.6

Standards:

Supported: 8 7 6 5

Likely used: 8

Configuration:

Logical max current

cylinders 16383 16383

heads 16 16

sectors/track 63 63

does it means that I "align the partition in sector 63 instead of 64?

I manage to preclear it, I install preclear V1.9, but is it necessary or it's already good for me "sectors/track 63 63"

Is it better to always preclear all new disk?

^^ more I learn about Unraid, more questions comes, more I'd become crazy xD thanks for your reply

ps: I plug a walkman helmet in the green plot sound car, i tape : root@tower:/# beep, nothing append, may I don't understand your post Speeding_ant. . . sorry speaker solid state mean for me in a traduction word by words: hard made speaker in the opposite of "liquide speaker" xD, I should more listening my English teacher many years ago  ;D

ps2: Just bought plus licence :)

No, you still want to preclear it with the partition starting on sector 64.  DO NOT install any jumper.

I manage to preclear it, I install preclear V1.9, but is it necessary or it's already good for me "sectors/track 63 63"

[/wuote]Do not confuse its "reported" geometry with the starting sector for a partition.  The "reported" geometry is there to make old operating syatems happy.

Is it better to always preclear all new disk?
Yes.  About 1 in 5 fail in the initial preclear cycle.  Do you feel lucky?

No problem.  unRAID has no drivers for any soundcards. You will never hear anything in your headphones.  It only has the driver for the motherboard speaker.  It can only "beep"

It does not beep when an error is detected.  It does sound like a good idea though.

Hi!

:)  No probs. You'll want something that looks like this:

41395d1270823866-pc-internal-speaker-.jpg

You can control it like this: beep -f660 -l 100ms -D 100ms

Here's super mario theme song as example. Do some reading up about how to use the go script, and you can play it on boot!

beep -f660 -l 100ms -D 100ms

beep -f660 -l 100ms -D 140ms

beep -f660 -l 120ms -D 150ms

beep -f510 -l 100ms -D 100ms

beep -f660 -l 120ms -D 160ms

beep -f770 -l 100ms -D 575ms

beep -f380 -l 150ms -D 575ms

Yes! I found a speaker!!! (in a very old electronic postcard  ;D)

I plug it and tape beep => one beep ! very low... but OK it's enough to ear it but I unplug a hard drive data

and no beep, unraid don't notify the problem, Did I missed to do some thing?

ps: Speedinf_ant, I paste your song in a .txt and played it on the tower :) it 's Mario no doubt :P

Hi

So my problemes and solutions:

1-Impossible to make my usb key bootable. . . message in win7 => volume name must be UNRAID... and it was already UNRAID (caps letters) maybe a problem with my language FR

[sOLUTION I USE]=>

I renamed unraid archive to unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.iso

then I download unetbootin (free) and executed it

choose "Image de disq ISO" select the unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.iso (verify that Type:Disque USB and choose the good usb key^^) then clic OK

my key was bootable (But there is a menu bootable, you have to choose UNRAID or MEMTEST)

bootable menu can be modify but I don't look for that yet

2-My WD20EARS is unjumpered an after install unMENU I can see in HD parm:

HDParm Info for /dev/sda WDC_WD20EARS-00M_WD-WCAZA5804131

/dev/sda:

ATA device, with non-removable media

. . .

Configuration:

Logical max current

cylinders 16383 16383

heads 16 16

sectors/track 63 63

IT SEEMS TO BE GOOD "sectors/track 63 63" so I don't preclear hdd and put it in my array

3-BEEP don't work

You can only use beeper, buzzer, plugged into the "Speaker pins" on your mother board, generaly near the power pins button, or hdd led pins (bottom right)

in fact for testing I unplug a disk but UNRAID don't notify it by beep (or anything else :( )

so I try to work on it, in my dreams unraid does long beep in any problem situation, beep unless I fix the problem... these can be done apparemently but HOW? ^^ I will search on forum and post my solution here.

[EDIT] beep command => http://swoolley.org/man.cgi/beep

ok... does Unraid already set to beep on error? I don't find beep code page, or beep informations, and when I unpluged a drive yesterday, no beep happend

hmmmm if there is a problem, does my serve say something (by default settings) or I found a error by a randomly access to the manage page 6 month after

do I have to use inotify or anything else? ^^ now nearly 16 h of research Rzzzzz RRRzzzzz Rzzzz  :-X
