Hitachi 5k3000 $69 at Fry's again

Featured Replies

With "Ultra Saver" shipping cost is $6 for one, $8 for 2, and $9 for 3-4 to my location.

Of course free shipping is better, but Fry's is pretty fair on shipping in my experience.

Pretty good deal.  This is the retail package, including SATA cable, model to SATA power adapater, screws, CD, and importantly excellent packaging inside the retail box, unlike the OEM drives from Newegg (and other vendors).  Definitely worth a few extra dollars to get the retail package IMO.

Also has tax for me in WA.  That means that the WD Greens still win out with free 2 day shipping from the egg with shop runner.

Dumb question from a noob: I currently have 7 drives @ 7200 rpm each in my Unraid. If I stick in a 5400 rpm, will I see a performance hit? So far I've been holding out for the Hitachi and WD 7200 rpm to go on sale - was that a mistake?

Thanks

@Ripper - I believe you will only see a performance hit when you are writing to or reading from the 5400 rpm disk.  Your throughput to all the other disks should remain the same.  Except during parity checks/calculations because that speed is essentially determined by the slowest spinning drive in your array.

Thanks for the info. Just amazing how low the price goes every year - I remember plunking $145 for the first set of 2TB drives...
