May 21, 201115 yr Doh! My buddy that got the shelf said he is "pretty sure" 2 sets of these should be fine. http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=3&modelno=sa-3201 2 in front and 2 in back. it would still cheaper then the shelf. he also said you might want to get a shelf eventually for smaller equipment like switches, battery backups or monitors. I'll ask him to send me a picture of his rack.
May 21, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the info. The build is coming slower than I expected, but I am in no rush. I have the power supply in, the mobo is in with processor and RAM, and the hard drive trays are powered and connected as much as possible. I am still waiting on my monoprice order. It will be here Monday. The hardest part so far has been removing the protective plastic from the case. That took 30 minutes alone LOL. I am taking pictures and I will be posting them here on Monday.
May 22, 201115 yr Author Ok. So I started Preclear on 4 of my 5 drives. The fifth drive states the following error: SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. SMART support is: Enabled Error SMART Status command failed Please get assistance from http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Register values return from SMART Status command are: ST =0x40 ERR=0x00 NS =0x04 SC =0xf0 CL =0x5f CH =0x70 SEL=0x40 A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.$ Do you wish to continue? (Answer Yes to continue. Capital 'Y', lower case 'es'): Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edit: This is the only drive on my SFF-8087 controller cards. The other 4 drives on attached directly to my mobo.

There appears to be some incompatibility between some HBAs (LSI SAS2008-based?) and the method which preclear and unMENU use to obtain SMART data and temperatures. Simple smartctl commands, from the command line, appear to work okay. Hopefully, Joe will be able to address this problem soon. In the meantime we just have to live with it - the preclear will still work, but you don't get any SMART reports.
May 23, 201115 yr Actually, I get that same error and I still do get SMART reports at the end of the preclear....
May 24, 201115 yr As I've reported elsewhere, using the -D option on the preclear command will restore full functionality: 'preclear_disk.sh -D /dev/sdx'
May 24, 201115 yr Author Thanks for that info. What % of humidity should I keep of under and what room temp of the server room?
