Files on exported SMB share appear there but have no content.

Featured Replies

For the past few weeks I have been having an issue where on my exported SMB share my files show up in the file explorer over SMB but are empty. Even when viewing those files in a terminal show the name and ext of the file but when accessed in any way reports "file does not exist". These files also show their correct size so there is data there. This is only an issue with SMB shares and not with NFS or FTP where the files are shown as well as their content and size.

I have tried reinstalling UNRAID as well as trying the "New Permissions" tool. I also have tried some of the fixes in this thread and none of those have helped me. I have attached my diagnostic zip from my server.

I would prefer to keep using SMB but will use NFS until a solution is found.

Can you give a specific example?

I have attached screenshots of one of the files effected [channels_-_Dakooters.sh] however its effects other as well  but not all of them. The first one is from my web browser on the unraid's web ui terminal. It shows that the file is there and has content. The next two are from my desktop (Manjaro) however these files have the exact same issue on my windows 11 machine. The terminal shows that the file cant be found even though in the forth screen shot the file is clearly there. The third one shows what happens when you open the file in a text editor. The second and third screen shot should show the information that the first one does since they are all the same file.

How were the files in question crested?   If they have the wrong permissions at the Unraid Linux level (should be owner=nobody. Group=users) then they will not be visible over SMB.   If this is the problem then running Tools->~new Permissions against the share will rectify the immediate problem, but you would then to rectify what caused it in the first place to stop it happening again.

Those files were created on the my desktop though SMB.

Those files used to work 100% perfectly with my SMB Share. It’s only just started (about a week ago) not work. All files continue to show and no files are hidden. Both file explorer on my desktop and UNRAID’s web console show the same files in the same directory. It is just the contents inside the file that are not appearing. If I connect though a NFS share those files display their contents.

Nothing has been changed (other than a fresh UNRAID install).

I have tried the New Permissions multiple times now and it hasn’t worked yet. I have also manually chosen those files to nobody:user. Those files through the web console show the correct permission level (nobody:user).

As I stated before in my original post I have no problem with NFS Share and would assume the permissions would work the same way.

I have also borrowed computers that have never been on my network to try and access those files and they have the same issue with SMB (and SMB only those files show their content with NFS).

This is not a problem about files themselves not being there. The problem is the contents of those files are missing while the “file” is still visible.
