6.10.0. Can't root login after upgrading

Featured Replies

Hello.

After upgrading to Unraid 6.10.0, I can no longer login via Web GUI, it always says “Invalid username or password”

I already tried:

resetting the password by deleting "config/shadow" and "config/smbpasswd",

after resetting, immediately changing the password in the dashboard,

different browsers.

Connecting via ftp works, but not the Web GUI.

What can I do?

Thanks!

Edit:

Reverted to 6.9.2, now the Web GUI login works again.

Additional info

Sorry for the trouble. Two ideas:
* There may have been an issue with the URL being used to access the server. 6.10 is a bit more strict.
* It may have been as simple as needing to clear your browser cache.

See my response to this similar issue, I was able to give them more specific advice because they included their diagnostics:

Thanks for the reply,

Will try that.

Hi. Having the exact same issue as derou. Managed to downgrade to 6.9.2 by copying the content of the Previous folder to the root of the flash drive. In 6.9.2 I can log in without any problems with my root user.

Same problem here. Logging into the webui worked in 6.9.2, but not anymore with 6.10.1. Tried deleting browser cache, also tried to use the server name as URL. No luck. :-/

Went back to 6.9.2 and it worked right away. I was using USE_SSL="no", so this was not the problem here.

@Outcazt @RoiIf you are asking for help I will need to see your diagnostics.zip file (from Tools -> Diagnostics, or by typing `diagnostics` at an SSH prompt.) If you can get it from 6.10.1 that would be ideal, otherwise from 6.9.2 would still be helpful.

Also post the exact url (starting with either http:// or https:// ) that you are trying to use, and the exact behavior you are seeing (error message? can't login using a password you are sure is correct?)

Here you are. :-)

It is 6.9.2 anonymized - as I would to update and restart the machine again which I can only do if nobody from the family is around. ;-)

I use https://172.27.0.5 to login. But I did not USE_SSL="yes" until today, so I had the problem with http and https. I also tried to use the internal DNS name which did not work, too. The error message was, that either username or password is invalid. I also saw a message in syslog, unsuccessful login or something, I do not recall the exact phrase. But I found it in the php scripts for the website.

Oh and I also changed the root password to a simple password "pass" which did also not work.

It works with 6.10.2 - although I cannot see a fix matching my problem in the changelog. ;-)

I am experiencing this issue as well with 6.10.3 (migrating from 6.9). Login also fails when using ssh instead of the GUI login (and no, password is correct ;)).

It was most likely this line from the release notes:

  https://forums.unraid.net/topic/124108-unraid-os-version-6102-available/

  * webgui: fix issue where 'root' login works with password from another username which includes string 'root'

If you can't login using SSH either then this is a different problem. I'd recommend resetting your root password:

https://wiki.unraid.net/Manual/Troubleshooting#Lost_root_Password

I agree... however, when I try to do just that, the USB stick is no longer recognized.... neither using windows (neither native, with the unraid flasher or with several other tools), nor using linux. Since I was able to boot unraid from it, I assume it Is this some VERY weird software bug. If my drive just would have died, that should not have been possible...

Any thoughts XP?

Do you have a backup of your Unraid flash drive?

sure

  • Community Expert

Sorry should have asked if you had a current backup. Assuming it is, all you need to get your configuration on a new install is the config folder from that backup.

See if you can do that with that flash drive so you don't have to transfer license to a new one.

I have several backups, the latest one right from before the migration, so that should not be an issue.

I guess I could do that, but I would probably order a new usb drive first, so as to avoid an old one having any issues. however, I would be a little sad that this upgrade (kind of) broke my usb drive. not the worst thing in the world, but still...

An upgrade is one time that quite a lot of data of written to the flash drive. in one go  If this 'breaks' the flash drive so it cannot even be seen in windows then that suggests that failure might have been imminent even without the upgrade.

true, but how come that I was still able to boot from it? The loader detected it just fine and the gui/shell came up as expected... just the PW didn't work :P

No idea.    If you can boot from it I would expect it to be readable in a PC/Mac but you said this was not the case.    Never before heard of being able to boot from it when it cannot be read in another machine as it is a standard FAT32 format which is nothing special.

exactly... I thought maybe this occurred before and somebody knows the root cause of this issue... OK, so a new usb drive it is ;).

Anyway, thanks!

See if you can reformat the original, and check that is has the expected capacity.

not sure what you mean by "original". the device itself does not get recognized, not a particular partition. gparted (e.g.) simply does not show anything but my regular internal drives.

I ran in to the same issue, no "known password" will work for root.

When i use SSH, the root password works just fine, just not for the web login for some unknown reason.

I do not have any special characters in the password, just letters and numbers.

I use IP address to login in with.

Do i need to delete the 3 files to get back in?

config/passwd

config/shadow

config/smbpasswd
