January 3, 200818 yr I have the original motherboard from the UnRaid. Has anyone use the onboard SATA controllers along with the original PATA PCI cards? I'm thinking of buying a new parity drive and would like to use the SATA port for that. thanks,
January 7, 200818 yr Author Would I see an performance increase for writing if I were to use the SATA drive as parity? thanks, David
January 7, 200818 yr Would I see an performance increase for writing if I were to use the SATA drive as parity? thanks, David Probably. However, some folks intentionally put their slower drive on parity because writes tend to be a "one time" issue whereas reads happen all the time. That isn't my way of doing things, but I understand their logic. Bill
January 23, 200818 yr I am trying to add 2 new SATA drives to my unraid. I have the original Intel motherboard. Previously I've only used PATA drives. I have set the IDE config to "Enhanced". I have tried connecting the drives to the motherboard SATA connections and to a Promise SATA card. I've tried attaching the drives directly and in a 4 in 3 SATA module. The drives don't seem to be seen by unraid. In looking at the bios, it is not clear that the motherboard is recognizing the SATA drives. Even in Enhanced mode, the SATA connections are greyed out. Any thoughts on what to try next?
January 24, 200818 yr Is it possible that he connected the data cables to the SATA drives, but did not connect power cables? I ask this because the drives don't show up in the bios configuration screen.
January 25, 200818 yr The SATA drives are not showing up in the bios even though the IDE config is set to Enhanced. The power cables are attached. I've tried it directly to the drive and in the 4 in 3 module populated with two drives. When I had the drives in the 4 in 3 module, the green leds were lit suggesting there was power.
January 25, 200818 yr I've also tried plugging one of the drives into a Windows Vista machine and it seems to work fine there.
January 27, 200818 yr That model of Seagate drive has a jumper block for selecting between SATA and SATA-II (specifically whether the host supports SATA speed autonegotiation). Refer to page 42 of this PDF: http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/desktop/Barracuda%207200.10/100402371j.pdf Try installing the jumper as described above and report back if this solves the problem.
January 27, 200818 yr Adding the jumpers seemed to get them to work when I connect them to the motherboard. I am adding the drives to the array now. I also have a Promise SATA card but when I connect the drives to it, unraid didn't see them (with or without the jumpers).
