Hello!

I have 5 x 14 TB HDD's that I would like to start using with UNRAID.

However, one of the 14 TB HDD's has data on it.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to migrate the data onto UNRAID.

Which plan is better?

PLAN A:

  1. Create array with 4 HDD's
  2. Copy data from 5th HDD to new array
  3. Preclear 5th HDD
  4. Add 5th HDD to new array as parity drive

PLAN B:

  1. Create array with 3 HDD's
  2. Add 4th HDD to new array as parity drive
  3. Copy data from 5th HDD to new array
  4. Preclear 5th HDD
  5. Add 5th HDD to new array to increase array size

PLAN C :

  1. Something else?

Basically both are the same.  But I would do A as it would allow the system to evenly write to all the disks.  Then you won't have the issue of parity running and you are trying to copy stuff over.  Or waiting for parity to complete to copy data over
