replacing 2x 8 cards with a 16port

Hi,

just want to run my upgrade plan past you guys to see if I'm going about it in the right way.

 

I currently have 2x 8 port cards in my server and would like to upgrade/swap them with 1x 16port card to free up a pcie slot.

my plan is as follows:

 

1- screenshot/copy disk list from main page of server

2- shutdown docker containers (only emby is in use) and disable

3- stop array and shutdown server

4- swap cards over and plug 4x 8087sff plugs into new card

5- power up server again

6- assign all physical drives back to correct disks as per list created in step 1 

7- start array again and reenable dockers

 

does this sound right or am I missing something critical?

Assuming no RAID controllers are involved you just need to swap controllers and that's it, devices are tracked by serial number, though always good to save the diags or take a screenshot of the GUI before starting.

both of the existing cards are in JBOD mode and the new one (i think) is in IT mode

If it's a RAID controller in JBOD mode it might require re-assigning all the disks, and possibly the partitions will be invalid, if you want post current diagnostics, they might give a better idea.

Those controllers work like a standard HBA, you just need to power down, swap controllers and power back up, all disks should be correctly re-assigned and ready for array start.

Well I'm shocked, i don't appear to have broken anything.  Well not so far anyway.  I've even installed my new external HBA card and disk shelf and the test drives have appeared on my server.  I'm calling today a success 🍻

can you list the cards and setup you used? I am thinking about getting a used disk shelf and I am wondering what I will need to get it all working?

the Disk array is an HPE 3PAR M6710 24x2.5" and i used a Dell H200e HBA card Both sourced from Ebay
