Unmountable: Unsupported partition layout

Recommended Posts

One of my drives failed so i replaced it with a brand new drive and get the message "Unmountable: Unsupported partition layout".

I formatted the drive but that does nothing, after formatting i still get the same message. I placed the drive in my windows pc, did an extended smart test and everything is fine and the drive works in windows.

I tried a different sata cable, a different sata port and nothing works. I am getting desperate with this, this should be a simple plug and play operation.

Did a short smart test in UnRaid and that completed with no errors.

Hope someone can help me with this.

I placed the drive in a free spot, now disk 6 instead of 5 and unraid cleared the drive without errors. So the drive is working. When i place it back as disk 5 it won't start because unraid is complaining i'm missing too many disks?

How can i remove the disk completely from position 6? I would expect things to go a lot smoother, i thought all i had to do is remove the bad disk and replace it with a new one. I desperately  need to start my array.

I still have the old drive. It had a red cross next to it, it was disabled.

That means a write to it failed (as described here in the online documentation) - not that the disk itself is necessarily faulty.  In fact looking at the diagnostics it appears it is probably fine.

You would have been fine if you had simply assigned the new disk as disk5 in place of the 'failed' disk5 but you made a mistake when you added i as disk6 as Unraid now thinks it should always have a disk6.   I notice that you also have a disabled parity2 disk which from its SMART information also looks OK.

Do you know if the disk5 was disabled when you did this?  This is relevant as if it was you were only formatting the emulated disk so the contents of the physical disk5 may still be intact.  If you formatted the physical disk then its contents are probably lost unless you run specialist disk recovery software such as UFS Explorer on Windows.  Do you have backups?

Not sure of the best way forward at this point - hopefully someone like @JorgeB will have an idea.

Yes, in the same slot, i.e., disk5, not disk6.

From what I can see disk5 was formatted:

Jun 23 10:25:02 Tower emhttpd: shcmd (101): mkfs.xfs -m crc=1,finobt=1 -f /dev/md5

So there won't be anything to rebuild, to confirm re-assign disk5 to disk6 slot and start the array, then post new diags.

I assume this was old disk5?

Model Family: Western Digital Red
Device Model: WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0
Serial Number: WD-WCC7K6DJD90S

If yes it's showing some SMART issues, so you should run an extended SMART test, before or after you can also mount the disk with the UD plugin to confirm it's mounting and contents look correct.
