Looking to refresh my unRAID server technology

Featured Replies

My current configuration is using an ASUS P8Z77-V LK motherboard with an Ivybridge i5-3570 CPU with 4 cores. No NVIDIA graphics card as yet. Running unRAID version 6.8.3. Haven't been able to update unRAID beyond 6.8.3 due to crashing.

Looking to upgrade the motherboard to an ASUS Z690-P Prime with an Alder Lake i5-12600K or i7-12700K CPU and a NVIDIA graphics card.

My objective is to enable hardware transcoding for Plex using the NVIDIA card and update unRAID to the latest version. I am a PlexPass member and I realize the K CPUs do not support iGPU.

Question: after seeing so many issues with unRAID Kernal and Alder Lake CPUs, will I have a problem with crashing? Should I put the graphics card in my old system first and enable hardware transcoding under 6.8.3 before I install the new motherboard/CPU? (If the former, upgrade unRAID to 6.10.3 or wait until I have the new motherboard/CPU in place?)

Or go down a different path?

Any Alder Lake unRaid success stories?

Judging from the silence I'm guessing no one has success with unRaid and Alder Lake

I have an 12600k with asrock z690 pro rs, no issues whatsoever.  I dont use igpu yet due to lack of support.  Everything else works 100% fine for me.  Arr suite, a few random other dockers to support my media ecosystem and a vm or two.  32 gb ram, 500gb nvme cache.  18tb across 6 drives w/ parity.

I dont have many plex users and the ones I do are 99% direct play.

So no point in using hardware transcoding with the 12600K since it is powerful enough?

HW transcoding using the iGPU is plenty fast enough.  Jellyfin was working for me using the iGPU, but there are issues with plex currently if you pass through the igpu.

SW transcoding in plex using the CPU cores should be fine with a 1080 stream or 2.  My 10 yr old 4 core i5 could do 1 1080 transcode.

I decided to pull the trigger on an i7-12700K and ASUS Z690-P Prime motherboard. Trying to decide if I should upgrade my current system to 6.10.3 from 6.8.3 before moving the drives over to the new configuration, or start the new system with 6.8.3 and upgrade there.

BTW, I did locate one stick of memory on my current system that shows errors on memtest. I replaced the memory and everything so far seems solid.

I have been using this combo for a few weeks now testing ZFS. I'm just getting around to moving my plex server to it and everything works fine so far.
Tonight I'm working on getting iGPU working for transcoding.  I didn't bother with an add-on gpu as iGPU worked pretty well with my earlier testing.  I'll let you know how it works out for my setup.

I have a 12700k on an Asus board with no issues. I have 70TB on 8 drives. I run 17 containers and a pihole VM.

I’m the only user of my plex server but it can transcode 4k HDR to 1080 or 720 no problem.  Max cpu is 50% and 60C while doing it.

Software or hardware transcoding?

I did upgrade my old system to 6.10.3 and everything has been fine for over 11 days.

Software with tone mapping, as the 12th gen intel doesn’t reliably do plex igpu hardware transcoding on unraid yet.
