June 27, 20224 yr Hello. I have almost finished backing up the data from my xpenology and wanted to understand how to best organize the future unraid installation. I will use 2x500gb ssd in raid 1 as cache and for docker installations and with the rest of the hdd an array (1x4tb, 2x8tb, 4x10tb and 1x12tb for parity) Now I would like to understand how to better organize the shared folder structure. I thought I would proceed like this: 1) Docker and download, two distinct shares located on the ssd. Allocation method and split level not important 2) Personal documents, photos, music, ebooks. Also in this case I was thinking of creating a share for each folder but what do I use as an allocation method? high water? and since each folder has several subfolders what should be used as split level? 3) Media, then Films, TV series and everything that is fed to Plex (14tb), in this case it is better to create a single Media share or one for Films, one for TV series etc .. etc ..? best allocation method and split level? what is the best method to access the least number of hdd's? Thanks for your help
June 27, 20224 yr Community Expert https://wiki.unraid.net/Manual/Shares#Default_Shares appdata, domains, system will typically be cache-prefer (or only) so docker/VM performance won't be impacted by parity and so array disks can spin down since these files are always open. Create separate shares for different purposes so they can have different settings. I always recommend highwater allocation. It is a good compromise between using all disks eventually without constantly switching disks just because one disk temporarily has more free than another. I don't usually bother with split level, it just makes it so files that "belong together" (however you want to define that) go to the same array disk and so avoid the slight delay you might get if another disk has to spinup, such as when binge watching tv series, or playing music "albums" (remember that concept?). And since split level overrides other settings, it can actually get in the way when disks begin to get full, and prevent files going to less full disks.
