What Data Cataloging Software Do You Use?

Featured Replies

For years I have used WhereIsIt? to catalog my DVD's.  I planned on using it to catalog my disks once I get them in final, organized and renamed order.  Is anyone else using it?  Or even better, is there anyone who has used it and found better software that I may not have heard of?

I only used catalog Software for my Movie Collection.

I have done that for years with VCD-DB but that project is abonded since 2007.

Now i use the Moving Pictures Plugin of Media Portal.

But when i look at the Software you have used till now i think you want to catalog all kind of data not only movies. Am i right?

All data would be the goal.  I find that I acquire may things that I can't keep track of.  Getting, I mean buying the same thing twice is something that my 250GB a month cap from Comcast could do without.  I do have a high interest in TV and Movies specifically.  The reason I ask the question was to try and pool all the knowledge of the unRAID users which I am always impressed with.  I will look into VCD-DB.  I am a little leery of something that has been abandon since 2007.  Are you still happy with your results?

Like i said, i am switching now my Movie Collection, that is why i build my unRaid Server.

My Collection now get automatically recognized.

VCD-DB was great Software but it is outdated.

Yeah, sorry about that.  It’s getting late and I didn't grasp what you were saying.

If you just looking for a stand alone catalog software (i.e. not something integrated with a media center), have a looks at EMDB (Eric's Movies Database).

I played around with a little sometime before and found it quite usable with a small foot print. I actually don't use it anymore as I use Plex Media Server and a thrid party application called Plex exporter extracts from the db and creates a nice html file with all my media.

I just let my XBMC HTPC's library mode do everything. It isn't perfect, but it is pretty good.  I used to be pretty anal about how I organized my media on the server, but now I don't really care too much just as long as XBMC reads it correctly and displays it in a nice format.  The only things that I continue to organize manually are documentaries, stand up, concerts, and other such things that don't fit into XBMC's TV or Movies libraries.

I use the older version of Ember and have it run an automated scan that grabs everything for me and when any of my machines connect to my unRAID server they don't have to scrape they just pull down from unRAID and I'm good to go. If I make a change I just remember to hit refresh in XBMC and its updated.

I'm grabbing whereisit so I can give it a try. ;)

When I have more time next weekend I will give all these a try.  Thank you all for the suggestions.  I must warn you WhereIsIt is more for data than anything.  It just takes snap shots of your media....  Either HDD or DVD or what have you.  I use it more to tell me what to not download again than anything.  Is there a reason you use the older version of Ember?

The older version of ember allows for launching via command line. I setup scheduled tasks to scan my media aka movies so when I rip another movie I can just drop it in a folder and click an icon and it launches. Renames it the way I want it, finds the thumbnail and fanart. I like my movies in my machine in this format.

Transformers.(2005)(720p)

--Transformers.avi

They removed command line support for Ember when it was taken over by another dev. I've never had an issue with the old version so its what I use. ;)

For TV shows I use Media Info Plus for scraping my TV shows. As well I use it in command line.
