Remote Access Through VPN via DDNS?

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I have an UnRaid server sitting behind a pfSense router.  On the router, I have a dynamic DNS running that reports my ISP provide IP to a DNS entry (like blahblah.ddns.net).  I also have my router setup with a VPN client with IPVANISH.  As it is right now, I can remote access through the My Servers Plugin when I have the VPN off.  However, once I turn the VPN on I can no longer access.  It makes sense.. the IP address of my WAN changes from the ISP provided to that of the VPN.  And it also makes sense that the VPN wouldn't be doing any kind of port 443 forwarding.  Is there a way to set up My Servers to follow a dynamic DNS rather than a reported out IP address?

If this is not possible, that's ok.  I still have an OpenVPN SERVER running on the router, which I can use to get direct access regardless.  It's just something I'd like to maybe suggest as a future feature.

There is not a configuration for this, the DDNS for myunraid.net is based on whatever IP address Unraid used when connecting to our cloud.

If you can somehow have your router send Unraid's outgoing traffic through the VPN then you might be able to get it to work. You would also need your VPN provider to forward a port to your router which would then forward that to Unraid. Fairly complex, not really something I would consider "supported"

I'd say your best bet is to connect to the OpenVPN server running on the router when you have VPN enabled.

Yeah that's what I'm doing now.  It's cool, OpenVPN client then open Unraid works.  It's a bummer it stops as soon as I enable the IPVanish VPN.  But honestly, MORE security is better than none so I can live with it.  :)
