Rebuilding Docker Files - General Questions

I am looking for a general explanation on the docker files on a cache drive.  I have a feeling that when I replace my cache drive in the past somehow the dockers were magically rebuilt.

 

Is there a general explanation someplace on how the cache drive is used to store the docker files?  I want to make sure I understand it before I consider replacing my cache drive.
