Unable to write to cache: Yikes.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I received an email last night stating the following.

* **Unable to write to cache**
* **Unable to write to Docker Image**

I am suspecting the cache disk might be faulty?  Not entirely sure.

Here are the diagnosticsunraid-diagnostics-20220719-0749.zip

Appreciate your help in advance.

Disable Docker and VM Manager in Settings until you get this resolved.

Cache filesystem is readonly to prevent further corruption.

Drive seems OK, run an extended SMART test on it.

Have you done memtest lately?

I haven't done a memtest, I'll do that shortly.

I am unable to get a monitor to display the startup routine when I power on the computer.

  • Community Expert

Do you mean you don't even get the boot menu? Or just that builtin memtest doesn't work when you select it.

You may have to download official memtest86

When I connect my monitor, keyboard, mouse and power up the computer, the display doesn't power on for me to see and interact.  :(  The computer is still starting up and unraid starts headless.  I am not able to intercept the default option and select memtest.

Do you get a BIOS splash screen or anything? Something not working with your monitor or the way it's connected if not.

I only have HDMI .  I connected it and changed my source, the display doesn't activate . I'll try once more.

Do you mean HDMI is the only output your computer has that will work with your monitor?

Yes, correct.  I connected it and it doesn't seem to activate the monitor.  It should work just upon connecting right away, correct?  I wouldn't think I need to reboot just to have the monitor work.

I was looking at the syslog and see messages like the following.

It appears like the disk has more than 180GB available.

Doesn't matter if it has space if it is readonly

Rats, true, I forgot about that.   Should I throw another video card in to see if can get an external monitor working so that I can perform the memtest?

  • Community Expert

Does your server only have HDMI out (unusual) or is it your monitor (TV?) that only has HDMI in? I run headless on both of my servers as well but always keep a spare monitor with multiple common inputs, and both of my servers have more than just HDMI to choose from.

You could try another video card but that just seems like adding more variables to the problem.

Yes, the unraid server has only 1 hdmi out.  The monitor has multiple options in, hdmi, dvi, etc.  Since we need to see memtest+ results seems like the best option is adding the video card that has more output options.

I have added the video card, but unfortunately, I am not able to get anything displayed on my monitor.  I tried each of the options I had on my video card, vga, hdmi, dvi.  Nothing is working for me.  What's my next option? I tried a bunch of linux commands to view the memory (dmidecode, /proc/meminfo, etc ) and they all seemed consistent, but I am not experienced enough to understand how to see errors with memory.

Note:  unraid is still booting up without issue headless.  I can view the webpage just fine, and ssh just fine.

Just do another USB with memetest on it and boot your box like that. Replace the UnRaid USB of course :)

What motherboard or video card only has HDMI and no other options?

Are you sure the monitor works at all?

Unless you can get video output somehow you can't see the results of memtest

Yes, the monitor in question works fine, I use it for work all day.

If the CPU doesn't have a graphics module, the motherboard video connectors will never work.

Are you sure the video card works? Have you tried it in different slots on the motherboard? Some motherboards only initialize video cards for initial bootup in certain slots, typically the first x16 slot. Other slots may be usable for graphics but only after the OS loads drivers.

I was under the impression it was working.  The results as of now are not convincing.   However, I do see the video card listed in the system devices.

I just moved the graphics card down to the slot further away from the CPU.  I tried different cables and different monitors.   I saw a tip to clear the CMOS to get the video working again, I am kinda skiddish to try that.  I am worried about borking the motherboard and having a bigger issue than I have now.

Definitely would like the option to have a monitor connected and viewable.  I can live with unraid being on standby until we get these issues resolved.

Silly question, is it possible to have memtest+ executed within a docker container?

No, memory tests need to have exclusive control of the motherboard.

Nope.  This is really frustrating.
