Question on memory

Featured Replies

Hi all!!!

My local store has an offer on this memory:

Mainly what I get is 6GB for the price of 4 and that is the cheapest memory I can get. Question is, is this memory ok for unraid and moreover is it an overkill? I was planning on building the system with 2GB but read that it is better to use 4GB since I will be using 2TB drives in the system.

Can someone clear this out for me?

I will be using an Asus M4A78LT-M AMD 760G motherboard.

Cheers!!!

If you have more memory and don't use it it won't cause any harm, It'll just sit there so if that is the best price you can get go for it.

I went from 2GB to 4GB just for the sake of it was cheap, but I can't tell you it made a HUGE if at all inprovement. ;)

If you determine that you don't need the extra memory, then I would suggest unplugging it so that it doesn't use any power.  Still, no harm in having it if it is that cheap.

You'll only need 2G unless your running serious addons.

For just basic file serving of movies, music, pictures, etc, 512 Meg is enough...  (My older unRAID server has been running with 512 Meg for nearly 6 years)

As stated, 2Gig is probably perfect for most as a balance between cost and usability.
