Does Disk 1 always spin up when Parity Disk spins up?

Featured Replies

Running 5.0-beta6a.

Finally using my server full time after months of building/testing.

I have noticed that Disk 1 always spins up when the Parity Disk spins up. Example: Started watching movie on Disk 5. Parity, 1 and 5 were all up. After an hour Parity and 1 spun down. After the movie, I picked a movie I knew was on disk 6. Parity, 1, 5, and 6 were all up now. I thought Parity, 5 and 6 would be the only ones up.

If this is normal, thats fine, just want to make sure.

Have you checked to see if they're on the same spinup group? Go to the Main page and click on the parity & disk1 links. You can also disable it in Settings.

Never thought of that but I did disable spinup groups 2 days ago to fix my spindown problem. Double checked, they are disabled and checked each disks and they were in 2 different spinup groups (even though groups are disabled you can still see what groups they are in, its just grayed out).

many media players will write to a file to track the "watched" status, or to track where you might have left off when watching a movie.  That "write" would require the parity drive spin up as well as the movie being "watched"
