Mix of 4K sector Drives and Normal Drives

Featured Replies

Hey guys so i always have been a western digital fan boy, but recently picked up 2 2Tb Seagate ST2000DL003 which i do not believe use the advanced format 4k sectors like the western digital drives do.

Now my question is i have the defualt set to make the MBR 4k aligned if it does this on drives that dont use 4kb will it effect performance? and if so how can i change the the alignment of single drives if its possible.

i have noticed a significant reduction in read speeds after the addition of these drives.

Thanks

All drives can utilize the 4K Alignment Sector 64 option. The only drive that will see lower performance from doing so is a JUMPERED WD EARS drive.

Read speeds on existing drives should not change at all since the data is only read from the single drive that contains it. The only time other drives come into play when reading is if the drive you're reading from is failed and the array is simulating the data from the parity and other drive(s).

Setting the default value does not effect current drives. It only affects future drives.
