[SOLVED] New build help moving files

Featured Replies

Hello I have been reading the forums for about a month and I finally got all the parts to start my unraid server.  My only question is how to best move my files?

I have two NAS storage drives I want to move to the unraid server, one is my TV shows and that other is my movies.  I know I can say for example two 2TB drives are for movies and another two 2TB are for TV shows.  Is there a way to automate the process to move for example all my TV Shows so that all of one series is on one drive and not split to two drives? The same for the movies?

Thanks for the help

Just set up everything, but don't add drives to the array yet.  Format, and mount the disks, and either attach the NAS through USB/eSATA, or export the disks as shares, and that way you can choose the drives you want to fill with TV shows, and the other with Movies.

You can create folders on the drives how you'd like your shares to appear, like

disk1

--TV

---Series

----Season

-----Series.Season.Episode.ext

disk2

--Movies

---Movie.Name

----Movie.Name.ext

Where TV and Movies would each be shares.

Split level for each share would be 1, so that anything under Movie.Name folders and Series folders would be on one drive once you include other drives in your shares.

After you've don't your initial load of the server, add your drives to the array, and assign your parity drive, start it up, and load the parity build.

Thanks for the help

Create user shares.

Movies

Split Level = 1

Include disks = disk1,disk2

If you will use movie types (for example Horror, Drama, Comedy etc) then use split level = 2.

TV Shows

Split Level = 1

Include disks = disk3,disk4

If you are starting with only a few drives and planning on moving more over more later then you could start with just disk1 and/or disk3 in the server and fill-in the disk2 and disk4 slots later with existing drives you move over once they are available.

Thanks for the information, after looking at the setting I have another question.

If I set the shares to high water and then in the future I add a drive to the share, will unraid automatically see the new drive, and fill the new drive to the point of the other drives?

Yes, as long as you include it in that user share.
