June 10, 201115 yr I am building the 5 drive budget off Raj's recco list: 5 Drive Budget Box Mobo: BIOSTAR A760G M2+ CPU: AMD Sempron 140 RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2 800 PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 CMPSU-430CX 430W Case: AZZA Helios 910 Hot Swap Drive Bays: Norco SS-500 Hard Drives: Green drives (5400 rpm or 5900 rpm), such as WD Green, Hitachi CoolSpin, Samsung EcoGreen, and Seagate LP Cost: $360 + shipping + cost of hard drives Capacity: 8 TB Expandability: Expandable to the 15 Drive Budget Box with replacement of the power supply.' This will primarily be a media server. Currently I run sabnzbd on my desktop but I see some people putting that on the server side, do I need to get a little better processor for that or will the sempron suffice?
June 10, 201115 yr If you download large posts, you may want a better CPU. A better CPU won't affect download speed or unpacking, but par repair will benefit from a faster CPU and/or more cores. My HP N36L has a low-end CPU, which is fine in most cases, but I have seen, in the worst cases, 6 to 12 hour par repairs for a badly damaged 45GB post.
June 10, 201115 yr Author Well to my dismay the BIOSTAR A760G M2+ is sold out everywhere so I don't know which CPU to buy yet till I know the motherboard I will end up with! Hopefully the recommended builds will get upgraded soon.

Hopefully the recommended builds will get upgraded soon. Raj is in the middle of a move and the testing he has done on some new boards is not quite complete. I would like to say it will be up soon, but I hesitate to do that. I know what it is like trying to move house and it can seem like a never ending process. Anyway, I think Raj posted somewhere about what new boards he was looking at, though for the life of me I can't find the post. Do some searching and see if you can find it.
June 13, 201115 yr Author I couldn't wait any longer! I was concerned more supplies would go out of stock so pulled the trigger on the Jetway board that Grandprix and gabrielB used successfully and a few others. I did find one post where Raj recommended a board that was soon to be out of stock but I couldn't find any reviews on it here. So anyways hoping to have the same experience as grandprix/gabriel did, although I am using the azza helios box and internal 4 in 3 boxes. Will only have 3 drives to start with so should get me up and running with plenty of expandability. I am a complete noob to linux, putty, you name it so I am sure I will be back with questions. My build is: 1 CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply 1 AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Processor SDX140HBGQBOX 1 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT 1 SanDisk Cruzer Blade 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ50-004G-B35 1 COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP 4-in-3 Device Module Hardisk Cage 1 JetWay JHZ03-GT-V2-LF AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard 2 GELID Solutions FN-PX12-15 120mm Case Fan with Intelligent PWM control 1 StarTech USBMBADAPT2 2 Port USB Motherboard Header Adapter 1 HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117) 2TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5 1 Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5 1 AZZA Helios 910 Black Japanese SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case I did end up going with the sempron if it's not enough I will just buy another chip, this one cost so little.
