Install Windows on unRAID box?

Featured Replies

When talking with friends the other day they asked if it's possible to install Windows on these LimeTech machines (like the MD1510-LL).

Is it possible to do so in general. Consider using a 15-bay machine with different drive capacities - will it work with Windows?

If you mean install Windows, instead of unRAID then Yes it should be.  Are you talking about windows 7, windows server, or what exactly.

The servers sold by Lime-Tech should run Windows just fine.

I can confirm that any server built by GreenLeaf (see my signature) will run windows.  We use the built in video on the motherboard so if you want to run something like Windows 7 and use the machine as a HTPC also then a dedicated Video card will probably be a good idea.  Just remember that if you go that route (running windows 7) and install a video card you will lose one of the x16 slots to that video card.

Also, installing windows as the OS will not allow you to use unRAID to have a protected array of disks, it will just re-use the hardware and allow you to re-partition and re-format the disks under windows.

Yes, the question I was asked was if it is possible to install a Windows 7 (just to name the latest) on the LimeTech hardware with 15 drives of different manufacturers with different drive sizes (formatted with Windows NTFS for example).

What Windows RAID level would work with these mixed drives?

It's just a question I was asked and I'm interested in an answer too.

Probably none.  Most RAID configurations require identically sized drives, or use the size of the smallest in the array.  Most would not allow you to keep the existing formatting.

What Windows RAID level would work with these mixed drives?

Probably none, as most raid's require the drives to be the same size, or at least be presented as the same size.  It the smallest drive you have is a 1TB then a RAID can probably be created that puts the size of every drive to 1TB and then created the RAID for there.
