If it will fit a Supermicro (or other brand) 5 in 3 plus the internal 8 drives, that would be a decent low cost server for 13 drives if you're on a tight budget.

This with an Atom bundle and a Supermicro MV8 card. You could build  complete low-power 13 drive server for about $300 without the drives.

 

I was thinking of it for an industrial strength workstation build.

 

I have a feeling I'll regret it in the end if i buy it for a workstation... I think i pass for now.

Has anyone compared this to a Norco? The egg doesn't show pictures of the inside but the front fans suggest there isn't a fan wall.

No, there is no fan wall in this model.

 

This is the "short" version. it has 2 80mm fans on the front. 1 blowing into each of 2 "drive cages".

 

There is a longer version of this case with 3 additional 120mm fans in a fan wall. that one is about double the price of this one on sale.

It is, and it sure was when I purchased this 5U case for my second unRAID server.  It was $27.99 with free shipping.

I did add 3 120mm fans on the front door, and I still have the two 60mm fans on the back panel.  All the other openings are sealed so air flow is through all the drives to the back of the server.  I added resistors in series with the fans to slow them down. Disk temps are mid 30s when all spinning.  when idle and just spun up, they range from 26C to 28C.  The case now has 10 data drives + parity.  I've got room for 3 more before I have to fashion the second internal rack.
