I'm curious if Maintenance mode is the same as Safe Mode. Or: take array offline (don't shut down). Bring array back up with Maintenance mode checked. This is not the same as safe mode.

Yes, Maintenance Mode and Safe Mode are different things.

To get Maintenance Mode to appear, you have to stop the array. Then the Maintenance Mode box will appear. Check it and start <thing> with it checked.
