Poor CPU Performance on Windows 11 VM (Ryzen 5800X)

Featured Replies

Unraid 6.11.1

5800x CPU, 128GB RAM (4x32GB DDR4 3600Mhz CAS16)

Quadro 4000

Radeon 6900XT

2x 18TB Storage Drives (1 as parity)

1x 1TB SSD for Array Cache

1x 2TB PCIe M2 SSD for Windows VM

VM Settings

I've set it to 5 of the 8 cores (so 10 of the 16 threads) on the logical cpu's section of the VM Template.

CPU Mode - Host Pass Through

64GB RAM Allocated (65536MB)

Machine Q35 - 7.1

Bios OVMF - TPM

Hyper V - Yes

USB 3.0 qemu  XHCI

Primary Disk - Manual, path set to PCIe M2 SSD (/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-blah blah blah)

Radeon 6900XT Pass through (With the soundcard, etc)

USB Controller Pass through

Power management in Windows set to high performance

Observations - I seem to never boost the CPU beyond the base clock frequency of 3.8Ghz. Ever.

Frame rates in FS2020 are appalling. I was getting 40-50FPS when baremetal on Ultra 1440p. I'm now stuttering and getting 1-2 FPS when I try and turn the aircraft.

When running Cinebench R23 the 'Avg Effective Clock' is barely over 500mhz. when looking in HWinfo64 Interestingly however the Single core score was 1532 pts which is about in line for bare metal. On the Unraid Dashboard it was never pinning a single thread to 100%

3DMark Timespy score is, ok, 13779 overall, with 18521 for the GFX but only 5623 for the CPU

It feels like something is fundamentally wrong. I'm not sure where to start - sorry for lack of detail, please let me know what else you need.

It feels like the easiest option is just an all core overclock?

Out of interest I tried an all core overclock to 4.6ghz.

Cinebench and 3DMark CPU scores went *down* - suggesting it must be 'silently boosting' in the background and the VM simply can't see it happening.

I added an additional core and thread to the VM (so, in effect making a 5600x 6c/12t cpu) and all of a sudden all seems well.

Weird.... !
