June 25, 201115 yr HI Guys, Simple question .... when i plug in a psu to the wall plug does it immediately give power to my HDD or does it need to put "on" somehow idea is while i am waiting to buy a more powerfull PSU did i want to run my unraid with 2 psu just wanted to add 4 drives on top of my case inside of a coolermaster 4in3 and power that with the second powersupply.. i have a 250w laying around here ... the sf8087 to 4 sata cable is 1 meter so i will have no issue to pull these cables out of the back of my cae to the 4in3 and the fan of the 4in3 will also run from the second powersupply... if i need to power "on" the second PSU can i trick it ... short 2 wires or so ? and if so ... which wires? i know it is a bit of a hack but it would be for a month ....i am running out of space
June 25, 201115 yr Author will answer my own question ... google is your friend http://aphnetworks.com/lounge/turn_on_psu_without_motherboard_the_paperclip_trick
June 25, 201115 yr Correct - the supply must have a signal to turn on most of the rails. There is a 5 volt standby rail active at all times that the supply is connected to the mains, but the others (as needed for a disk drive) are only present when the motherboard tells the supply to switch them on.
