no, formatting typically takes somewhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, depending on the size of the drive and your hardware.

 

I just timed how long it took for a 2TB Hitachi_HDS5C3020ALA632 to be formatted  on my server, and it was 125.5 seconds. (just over 2 minutes)

 

perhaps you should attach a syslog to your next post.  (instructions under "troubleshooting" in the wiki)

You sure it isn't clearing the disk, as opposed to formatting it?  I don't think you get a % complete on formatting.

even then, unRAID clearing a drive will typically be at roughly 100MB/s, or 6GB every minute.  2000GB (2TB) would then be somewhere around 5.5 hours.

Glad you made some progress, but.....

Unless you figured out your issue, you'll may have issues when you add the other disk.

 

Since you did not post a syslog, I'll just assume you had the skills to analyze it yourself for problems.

Ugh...it looks like its the Hitachi drive that's causing the problem. I just bought the 2TB 5K3000 and tried to install it in an Icy Dock. It is clearly Sata, but it looks like UnRaid is picking it up as IDE? I think this is the problem....any thoughts? I attached my sys log

Make these changes in your BIOS:

 

On the Chipset tab

Choose 'Southbridge Configuration'

Set the OnChip SATA Type to AHCI

Disable SATA IDE Combined Mode

These may not match your motherboard's BIOS exactly, but there should be a similar option for each of these.

 

Also, in the future, save your syslog into a text file (using Notepad in Windows or TextEdit in MacOS) and attach that text file to the post, it makes it much cleaner.
