Shrink array with dual parity

Featured Replies

I found a few posts with similar titles but they weren't quite asking the same question (I think).

I am using the clear-disk method to shrink the array and I have two parity drives. When I checked "Parity is Valid" and went to start the array I got the message, "Dual parity valid requires ALL disks in their original slots." The instructions say to click "Proceed," but I got cold feet since this message seems to be calling out dual parity specifically. I can wrap my head around the idea that zeroing the drives makes the first parity drive valid when they are removed, but I don't really understand the method the second parity drive uses well enough to know whether the same holds true for it. Can I proceed?

Parity2 depends on the specific slot assignments of each disk. As long as you don't change any slot assignments and just remove the zeroed disk and leave its slot empty then parity2 would be valid.
