[SOLVED]Network problems with unraid 4.6/4.7

Featured Replies

Hi All,

(sorry for my poor english :))

I would like to share an experience with an unraid box (unraid 4.6/4.7) and network problems.

Hopefully the story ended well.

First of all, the unraid box :

Abit QuadGT IX38 (integrated network)

ATI graphics card (1800XL old stuff)

12 data disks (various manufacturers and various sizes with various controllers too (promise, rocketraid, built-in)

1 Hitachi parity drive

1 Maxtor cache drive

Unraid pro licence.

1 Gigabit dlink router

1 Gigabit dlink switch

The Unraid box is connected to the switch and the switch connected to the router.

The router was set up to dhcp. To connect to the box, i used a W7 computer connected to the router with a static ip.

Booting the unraid box, all seemed to work well for some time ...

I was able to connect to the box with the browser but it was very slow.

Next tried to ping the box by ip or by name and i saw that sometimes the ping was timed out. 5 minutes later no way to ping the box or browse the content of the box.

The console was working with a keyboard connected (tried ifconfig, ethtool both seemed to work).

Looking at the syslog i did not find anything that was wrong.

After many reboots and changes : making a static ip on the box, changing network group, resetting router, disconnecting controllers and so on, connecting and disconnecting cables and switch, every time the same problem occured.

It took me some time to find what was wrong. Was it unraid ? Was it a hardware problem ? Network related ?

No way to find an answer, i searched the network topics (great support :)) on the forum to find an answer and it seemed no one was stuck with a similar problem.

Today, i googled to find if linux users had the same problems with the same motherboard (i was convinced it was a hardware problem located on the LAN Realtek chip) on different linux OS.

I found that someone had problems with ati graphics cards with ubuntu (far from my network problem ...).

So i tried to change the graphics card with a nvidia graphics card i had and all problems were gone. Don't tell me why ...

I seems that Abit QuadGT IX38 and ATI 1800XL are not very good friends.

Hope this helps someone else.
