Newb question...

Hello all,

New to unRAID and after a few hours I finally having it booting properly....

I thought all was good on first attempt, system booted up to the log in, but eth0 did not startup (neither did lo for that matter).

boot log showed:

/etc/rc.d/rc.init1.conf: line18: /boot/config/network.cfg: no such file or directory

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf: line 19: /var/tmp/network.cfg: no such file or directory

Joy!

After poking around, I found that my usb stick (cruser mini 256mb) was not being 'mounted' in /dev/disk/by-label (yes it had been labeled UNRAID when I formated it, even went so far as trying to format as UNRAID and unraid, with the same result).

I was able to manually mount the usb stick and copy the contents as required to /boot and /var/tmp and get all the services started including ethernet but of course after rebooting all the changes were gone.

Changed to a 512mb Kingston usb key.... 'no bootable image on partition' no matter what bios setttings I set....

Changed to my 2gb Memorex key (which I really didnt want to lose to this project but oh well) and it booted fine! yay

So just a note to anyone who cannot get ethernet working on boot up, make sure your usb key is being recognized correctly and mounted in /dev/disk/by-label as UNRAID@

Now for my question before I go and purchase the pro licenses....

I've only got a few older drives lieing around:

1x 200gb

1x 80gb

4x 40gb

I also plan on moving over 2x 500gb after I am able to get the data off of them temporarily and them put all that data to the unRAID storage...

When trying to configure the 3 disk array I can choose whatever disks I want BUT the parity drive has to be the largest drive of the array apparently.

So from what I can tell, until all drives are of the same size (some time way in the future due to cash constraints) I will be 'losing' considerable drive space for the parity drive?

When I can move the 2 500gb that I am going to free up, what would the process be?

- add 1 500gb and set as the new parity drive and wait for that to complete and then add the other drive(s)?

I'm pretty sure I understand that correctly, but just want to make sure.... I'll just have to 'compensate' with lots of smaller drives to make up for the loss of the 500gb drive to parity..

If you could confirm my thoughts or correct them if I'm wrong, it would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Obi

You are correct.

The parity drive needs to be equal to or larger than your largest data drive.

If I were you, I would invest in at least one more drive to make your life easier.    A 500 GB drive can be had for under $100 now.    http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4795159      Even just one more would make the logistics of moving over data a whole lot easier.    2 more would make it completely painless.

thanks for the reply...

yeah, I'll see what I can do about an extra drive or two.... still paying off xmas bills and have to get a new case that can handle all the drives plus the licenses... thats what credit is for, right?  ;D

You could always just assign all the existing drives as data drives and not assign a parity drive at all.  (yes, unRaid can be run like that too)

Of course, this will not protect you from any data loss, but the parity drive can be added at any time thereafter and once it is, your data will be protected.

The initial loading of your data drives will go much faster without a parity drive too, since parity will not need to be calculated until you assign a parity drive.

The risks of a drive failing are basically the same as you are currently taking now ... until you install and assign a parity drive.
