smaller parity drive size

Featured Replies

hi

can the parity drive size be smaller the the larges drive or how much parity gb is needed pr 1tb data if we take the unraid plus 6 drives of 1tb this will give 200gb parity pr 1tb data  then i a 3 drive setup with 2 1tb data then a 500gb parity drive shut be ok

or am i total wrong

ps have scanned this forum cannot finde info about it and yes i am a noob

you are totally wrong.

parity drive MUST be as big, or bigger than the largest single data drive assigned to your array.  It is not necessary for it to be bigger than the largest single data drive, but it can be. It cannot be smaller.

If your largest single data drive will be a 1TB drive, and if you have 20 data drives of 1TB or smaller sizes, then the parity drive must be 1TB or bigger.

If your largest single data drive will be a 2TB drive, even if you have 20 data drives of 2TB or smaller sizes, then the parity drive must be 2TB or bigger.

In your example with 3 drives, one of the 1TB drives must be assigned as parity, and the other 1TB drive and the 500Gig drive assigned as data drives for a total of 1.5TB of parity protected storage.

Most of your questions can be answered by reading through the wiki...

Basically your Parity must be the biggest. ;) LOL

Basically your Parity must be the biggest. ;) LOL

OR ... EQUAL in size to your biggest data drive assigned to the array, but no smaller.
