July 20, 201114 yr Author Thanks for the fan help ProfQ. There are some cheaper options but I would rather stick with something that was tested and worked. I'm still waiting for the Norco's and fans to arrive but tonight I plan to put the rest of my components together and run preclear on one of my hard drives.
July 21, 201114 yr Thanks for the fan help ProfQ. There are some cheaper options but I would rather stick with something that was tested and worked. I'm still waiting for the Norco's and fans to arrive but tonight I plan to put the rest of my components together and run preclear on one of my hard drives. No worries, just glad I could help. Before settling on the Coolink 801 for the Norco, I tried a couple of other fans, including another well known 'silent' 80mm. My hobby before becoming UnRAID-aholic was silent PCs. At least you've saved yourself the testing and can go straight into the build. Have fun!
July 22, 201114 yr Author I'm happy to report that the Norco SS-500's arrived today from 3BTech and are the new version. Free shipping made it a great deal. Hopefully tonight I can build.
July 22, 201114 yr This is gonna be a really nice build. Really curious how the Norco's will look in that Lancool case. When you're ready building don't forget to post some pictures
July 23, 201114 yr DROOL! LOL at the red backdrop! Now all you need is the supermodel standing there motioning to the parts with her hands.
July 23, 201114 yr It's all here! DROOL! LOL at the red backdrop! Now all you need is the supermodel standing there motioning to the parts with her hands. Fantastic! Hope you have a lot of fun putting it together. Best, ramon
July 29, 201114 yr Author I finished the build. Not all the hard drives are in but it boots and asks for the Tower login:. It's very quiet. In fact, I didn't think it was working until a saw the USB flash drive light inside the computer. I need to attach the USB drive to just below the motherboard with some velcro. If anyone else is going to use the Norco-500 make sure you have tiny screws. It took me hours to find enough that were small enough and you may be able to tell from the picture I still had to use washers. Here's a link to the screws recommended by Rajahal. Here's a few more pictures... Fan swap: Case exterior & interior: I will be unpluging the bottom two Norco's as I have no drives in them but I wanted to make sure the fans turned on. I assume I should close all the vents on them. I need to add the rest of my hard drives, run preclear on them, play around with unRAID and purchase a license.
July 29, 201114 yr Congrats! It looks nice and clean. About the vents in the Norco cages not populated yet -Although it's a good idea to close vents of trays not in use of the Norcos, I'd suggest you don't do that yet. Your server needs airflow and the whole front air intake of your build is via the Norco cages. USB fix-maybe just taping (electrical tape) the cable where the USB is plugged into to the case, where your USB is resting now. Maybe that's a temp fix until you get your hands on some velcro. Welcome to the UnRAID-aholics community! R
August 5, 201114 yr Author I bought an IBM ServeRAID M1015 for a bargain. I flashed it to a plain SAS2008 following this guide. It's installed and appears to be working. I am currently running preclear on all five hard drives. Three are connected to the motherboard, one port 0 of the ServeRaid card and one on port 1. Temps are currently 36-37°C. I am using unRAID Server version 5.0-beta10 AiO, unMENU 1.3, and preclear_disk.sh beta 1.12. I followed the instructions to prepare the USB flash drive. I am using a static IP address instead of dhcp so I edited the network.cfg file on the flash drive listed in the config folder from: USE_DHCP=yes IPADDR= NETMASK= GATEWAY= to USE_DHCP=no IPADDR=192.168.1.102 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 I followed the Configuration Tutorial listed on the wiki. I made a few changes to the motherboad BIOS. In Google Chrome I have to use tower/ instead of //tower to access the server. In unMENU I installed the following packages: apcupsd 3.14.3, bwm-ng, mail and ssmtp, pci utils, Clean Powerdown and screen. I plan to add monthly parity check once I have everything running. I still need to figure out user shares. Any reason I should buy they 2 key pro version instead of a single key?
August 6, 201114 yr Author Let there be light! Preclear in progress. I plan to unplug the power led next time the case is open.
