New system hangs - bzimage/bzroot stops loading

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I need your help ...  I am trying again to setup my first unRAID server but I can't seem to get my system to boot.

During the start up of unRAID, the system hangs loading either bzimage or bzroot. I have tweaked the BIOS settings and the system does boot from the USB key. I get the Lime blue screen and then the system starts loading unRAID, loading first bzimage and then bzroot, but I have never been able to get past the bzroot.

Most of the time, the system stalls during the load of bzroot, but never at the same point. Most of the time I get past the first line, but not always. Other times, the system stalls while loading bzimage.

I can't figure this out !?!?!?

My server is built with a DFI RDX 200 Lanparty motherboard with a AMD Sempron 3200 processor. I am using Lexar Firefly USB keys and have "prepared" them using both syslinux.exe and syslinux.exe -sam .

Can you please help ? What can I try to get this going ?

Thanks in advance !

A few suggestions:

1. Could this be a hardware problem, such as a hot CPU?  When you get into the bios, check the temps.

2. Do you have the USB key labeled "UNRAID"?

3. If this particular key came with U3 software, that can be tricky to uninstall.

4. Try reformatting and reloading the software.

5. Try a different USB key.

I found several hits when searching for "bzroot boot" (without quotes) but not a great deal of answers.

Thanks Bill.

I have hit all of these and I am in good shape. Still no joy !

Appreciate your help !

Doh !!!! That's why ?!?!!?  ::)

Assuming-

- the board boots another OS (eg, windows) via hard drive just fine

- you tried the 'memtest' selection and it also runs just fine

Sounds like there must be some kind of data corruption in reading the USB Flash.  Might try:

- different Flash device

- try different USB settings in the bios, eg., use USB1.1 instead of USB2 - it will boot much slower, but would be a good test to see if that's the problem.

Well, my saga continues. Thanks Bill and LimeTech for chiming in.

To narrow things down further, I have -

  • tried three different Lexar Fireflys along with a couple of other USB keys
  • used different USB ports directly on the board and from a connector off a header on the board
  • ran MemTest succesfully
  • used different memory sticks on the board (512/1g, mached dual channel, cheap, top notch, etc.)

but all to no avail. I have not tried to boot another OS from a hard drive, that's my next attempt. I also can't find a way to "slow down" the USB on this motherboard.

I really, really, want this board to work ! It would be fantastic (4 IDE, 8 SATA on board) and I have two of them ready to be pressed into unRAID service.

Any other ideas would be appreciated and I'll continue to update this thread.

- You might try disabling USB keyboard/mouse support in the bios

- Make sure you have the latest bios for that board

I am impressed Limetech. Thanks for the support ! It feels like I am getting really close !!!

Disabling USB keyboard and USB mouse in BIOS resulted in the system no longer being able to boot from the USB key  :(, but I just turned on USB keyboard and left USB mouse off and was able to make some serious progress !

unRAID now boots but I can't seem to run to the end of the boot to a usable system.

On my first attempt, I got to the point where the network interface was recognized and it looks like it was trying to get an IP address and then it stalled/hung. A reset was required.

On my second attempt, I stalled at "[258.226171] EIP: [<c014497d>] cache_alloc_refill+0x175 SS:ESP 0068:de3a9e48

What can I do next ?

Thanks again !!!!

The last person that posted a similar message had bad RAM.

That doesn't mean it is the same problem/solution, just a datapoint.

Also, have you tried various USB ports on the system or are you using the same one each time?

Bill

I second the RAM as the point to investigate.  Run MEMTEST.

Also, if you have two banks of RAM, swap them.

Woo Hooo - I got it working !!!

Thank you all for your help.

Also, if you have two banks of RAM, swap them.

This is what finally solved it. Same RAM, just used the other set of banks - who knew ...

I also formatted my USB key as FAT only because I read in another post that had helped. But it was only once I changed the RAM.

C'mon, admit it.  It was the goat.
