Cases for 3 X 3x5

Featured Replies

I'm looking for case that can take 3 3x5 enclosures for a 15 drive build. Which cases will work?

How about these:

  • Thermaltake V5
  • Xigmatek Utgard Mesh CPC-T90DB-U03

Thanks,

David

Either would work.  The Antec 900 and Azza Helios 910 are also popular choices.  If you can find one, the Centurion 590 is an older favorite.  If you can get them, Sharkoon (a German manufacturer with a limited US presence) makes the Rebel 9 in a variety of flavors (I like the Rebel 9 Pro Economy) or the T9.

Aside from the Sharkoon cases, the Azza and the Xigmatek Utgard have the best cable routing options, if that matters to you.

The Thermaltake should be fine - there are no obvious obstructions (other than the support rails, which will require the standard G-clamp mod).

I am hoping that my 5in3s will arrive by the end of next week, at which point I'll be able to confirm my belief.

I really like the V5, and will be posting photos in the UCD area when the build is complete, together with a review of the iStarUSA BPN-350V2 (trayless) cages.

if you can't find a Coolermaster CM590 for your 3 X 5 in 3's ?

i think i found a direct clone from Nexus. Front is a little bit different but the inside looks the same.

And standard comes with 2 x 4 in 3's and some accoustic material on the side panels.

The inside from the Xigmatek Utgard Mesh CPC-T90DB-U03 also looks like that, (Good price for that case i think : 60 Dollar)

Nexus Prominent 9

The Nexus is around 70 to 75 € over here.

Holy crap, Rembro, you're not kidding, that is a clone.  I mean, the bones are at least.

They neglected to clone the price however.

How much did the CM590 cost?  I mean, I assume the price in Euros is after VAT, which in Germany at least is 19%.  So the price of the case, minus 19%, converted to USD is around 90 bucks, give or take a few bucks based on the current Euro rate.

And that ignores that the cost of items (once again, at least in Germany) is usually priced fairly closely to what those items cost in USD.  Just because it only takes .65 Euros to buy a Dollar doesn't mean you'll spend .65 Euros to buy something in a German store that would cost a buck in an American one, so I'd bet stateside pricing would probably be closer to $75 than $90.

Well, if you work on EUR1 = USD1, then pity the poor Brits.  We reckon on GBP1 = USD1.

Don't know what the CM590 did cost in Dollar back in the days when it was available in USA , but i know that they sold it over here in Belgium/The Netherlands also around 70 to 75 €

I bought 2 pieces second-hand,  but i really like the looks of that Nexus one,, ( closed side panels and the design of the fan-panel on top) maybe it's time to change :-)

Anyone interested in a CM590?

The CM590 used to cost about $60 USD in the US, and generally Newegg would offer free shipping as well.  Later in life it went up to around $80 USD.

Thank you Rembro for bringing the Nexus and Xigmatek cases to my attention!  The Nexus looks very nice, I just wish it were a bit cheaper.  The Xigmatek is the right price, but lord is that side panel ugly...

:-) Rajahal,, That were my first thought's also when i found the pictures of that xigmatek case on Newegg!! Can't judge taste !! but noway that case will come in my house! , it's just too much '' Pimp my Case'', for a young dude who want's a cheap-ass gaming rig and show off to his Lan-party Brother's that would be oke!

I personally like the more discrete, business look for my UnRaid server,  No clear side windows or too much fans with too flashy colored led's visible from the outside.

More like Lian-Li PC50 Armorsuit kinda style, Or the also obsolete Lancool PC-K12B,, Wow i really like that one.

Anyone over here want's to get rid of that uber-discrete Lancool case?

Can't take the credit for that Xigmatek,, User dgaschk aka David found this one.

Yes, yes I am.  It's been at least a few months since I roadtripped over to the Low Countries, I can pick it up in person. :D

I also really like the PC-50, Rembro, it's a shame it's so expensive.  Honestly, I'd prefer a Lian Li 9-5.25' bay case without the plastic bezels, though.  Just gimme some of that brushed black aluminum on the outside, naked and shiny on the inside and call it a day.  I'd probably spend some money on that, just to have an unRAID server with style.

Also, has anyone seen this one on Newegg before?  It's really cheap, and it shows, but given that I often see unRAID builds with cable routing best described as "what's cable routing?" it's not likely people will miss it.  My worry would probably be the available space horizontally for the 5-3 modules.  You definitely cannot accuse it of being spacious internally.  If it didn't cost me the price of the case to ship it to an APO, I'd pick one up just to test it out.

@ Alecthar,, oke for me,, from what country are you? it's a big box!! i paid €30 for it,, if i can get that in return that would be fine by me!

Is there a proven "idiot-resistant" 3 x 3x5-supporting box?

By "idiot-resistant," I mean not even needing to file down plastic tabs with a razor (much less grinding metal) - are any of the viable boxes on the market right now effectively plug-and-play with these drive cases, or will at least a little modification be required?  Those discounted Lian-Lis and CM590s are sure sounding good right about now...

I live in Germany, and I'll gladly pick it up and pay 30 Euros for it.

As far as I know, basically every case on the market has the 5.25' guide tabs that you're trying to avoid.  The good news from your perspective is that you don't have to grind, cut or file the tabs if you can get access to a nice deep C-clamp.  My understanding is that it's Raj's preferred method of tab control, and it has the advantage of not involving power tools or blades of any kind.  As the son of an avid carpentry hobbyist, I can tell you that the worst damage you can do to yourself by accident with a C-clamp is dropping it on your foot.

The AeroCool Vs-9 will not hold 3 5x3s. The wires for the front ports must be routed through the drive bays.
