advice on adding drive?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I ordered my key  so I can add a 4th drive to my UnRaid.  I purchased a hitachi 2TB 7200 drive and I need advice on weather to add it as my parity drive or as a data drive?  Other 3 drives are the WD EARS green drives.  I thought since it is a 7200 I would make it the parity drive, but I wanted to get someones advice first.

Thanks in advance,

Makes sense to make it parity drive.  If you have both parity disk and a data disk both 7200 RPM, you will get a boost in write performance writing to that data disk.  Since you'll only have one 7200 RPM drive, making it parity really won't help right now - but when you add another 7200 RPM data drive you'll be ready.  If your parity is 5400 RPM, even if every other disk is 7200, you won't get the write performance boost.

7200 RPM parity drive will help if you are writing to more than one data drive in the array at the same time.  Maybe not a common occurance.

Thanks bjp999,

That is what I was thinking but needed confirmation.
