Hardware validation

Hello,

I want to embark on the unraid adventure.

I want to use the NAS and VM function.

I want to use Nextcloud on a debian VM, and maybe Jellyfin on docker or VM.

I would have other VMs to do later such as Bitwarden or any other self-hosted password manager, as well as other projects.

Here is the configuration I have in mind:

- ASRock B550M PG Riptide
- Ryzen 5 5600g
- 2x8GB RAM Kingston Fury Renegade (3600Mhz CL16)
- 500W PSU
- 2 M.2 SSDs for cache
- 6 HDDs for storage

What do you think of my setup? Compatibility between components and Unraid?

I know that AMD is not recommended for Jellyfin but this processor is in my budget given these performances.

This motherboard is one of the rare B550m to be able to use all m.2 and SATA ports. I hesitate with the Asrock X570m pro4 which was mentioned in another post but it costs more and I didn't see a big difference with the B550m PG Riptide.

Looks good to me. You could always add in a nvidia quadro or gpu for jellyfin transcoding in future.

I'm not very interested in Jellyfin/AMD transcoding yet. The addition of a graphics card will be mandatory for this use?

All the applications you mentioned have dockers.

Unless you can get Jellyfin to use the integrated GPU in the Ryzen 5600G. 

 

Some claim to have made AMD iGPUs work with Jellyfin, so, perhaps it is possible.  If not, you will need a discrete GPU if you want to do hardware transcoding. 

 

Of course, you can always let the CPU do the transcoding but it puts a load on the CPU.  Technically, the 5600G could handle up to 8 simultaneous 1080p transcodes in software with the CPU as it has a passmark score of 19848.  2000 passmarks are recommended per 1080p transcode with another 2000+ for unRAID overhead.

I use transcoding a lot (with Intel iGPU) because I have remote users to whom I stream Plex content.  Locally, everything is direct stream with no transcoding required.

I highly suggest getting used to and using Docker containters for anything that has them.  They are far more light weight then a VM (especially a windows one).

 

unRAID makes it pretty easy to get up and running with dockers for your apps.

Two years ago, when I built my first Unraid server, I knew zero about Docker.  I now have 18 of them running full time on the server, with another 8 or so utilities that I start up when needed.  If you are already comfortable with VM (and systems in general) you will quickly like Docker.

If your clients are direct play capable then no transcoding required.

You can even make any client TV 4K direct play capable if you want to go that route but that normally requires some additional hardware.
