Hardware Recommendation - New build

Featured Replies

Hi All!

I am looking to build new server and hoping to get some feedback/recommendations from the group!

I have been running an unraid server for about 3 years now and absolutely love it. The curent system is based arroud a Z97 board and i5-4590k and unfortunately it is starting to get a little tired, but also uses a lot of power at idle.

So the theme is to build is power efficiency, but still capable of running the below items. I have read through the post here https://unraid.net/blog/energy-efficient-server and it was great, now i am keen to get some feedback on what i have put together.

The major use for the server is

- File back up/NAS

- Plex Media Server

- Next cloud

- Windows VM non-gaming

- Home Assistance

Current Build list here https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PbmmpH Key Items below and some reasons why

CPU: Intel Core i5-12600 - Has the latest intel quick sync built-in graphics to be passed through to plex

MoBo: Gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4 - seems to be a good option that doesn break the bank with plenty of PCI slots for expansion

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB)

Sata Expansion: lsi 9211-8i (already owned)

GPU: Geforce GT 1030 (already owned) - Pass through to Windows VM

Hard Drives Array: 2 x 8TB WD 5400 + 2 x 8TB WD 5400 (Already Owned)

Cache: 2 x Samsung 870 Evo 2 TB - large Cache to hopefully allow for mover to run less and keep the drives spun down

VM passthrough - Samsung 980 Pro 1TB

I have heard a good idea could be to have a seperate SSD for the Plex app/meta data as well

Keen for some feedback!
