HDD controller card

I'm looking at getting the RocketRAID 2720.  136.00 shipped from Amazon.

Would this be a good choice?  I've noticed there are some pretty in-depth threads on controller cards alone.

I have both PCIE x8 and PCIE x16 slots available.  My motherboard currently supports 7 SATA connections.  I plan on adding two controller cards to support up to 20 drives.

If anyone has an alternate suggestion in price/performance, please feel free to chime in.

Linux drivers and a JBOD mode indicate that it should work with unRAID, but there's no guarantee until you actually plug it in and try it out.  If you want a no-hassle card that is guaranteed to work (assuming you don't get one that is defective), then go for the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8.  Happens to be cheaper too ;)

By the way, no hard drives on the market today are fast enough to saturate SATA II, let alone SATA III.  So even though the Rocketraid card is rated faster than the Supermicro, in practice it won't make a bit of difference.  Only SSDs benefit from SATA III.

I use the SuperMicro card myself with break out cables. I might actually buy another one as a backup in case the original dies. You never know.
