Permissions problems

so i keep running into issues where i can't backup folders or files to my unRAID, because i don't have the appropriate permissions...since i've been doing data housekeeping for the entire past 10 days (it ain't easy maintaining 20+TB of production data from 20+ years of productions), i've had to shuffle some folders around, sometimes leaving an old and empty folder behind, or needing to delete an entire folder with sub-folders and files...more often than not, when trying to delete through the OSX Finder, i get some sort of a "can't do", due to some rights i do not have.

for example, i have 12 disk shares...on a couple of them i want to delete a folder and everything in it...i telnet'ed into the unRAID filesystem, and have navigated into mounts:

root@unRAID:/# ls

bin/  dev/  home/  install/  mnt/  root/  sys/  usr/

boot/  etc/  init@  lib/      proc/  sbin/  tmp/  var/

root@unRAID:/# cd mnt

root@unRAID:/mnt# ls

disk1/  disk11/  disk13/  disk3/  disk5/  disk7/  disk9/

disk10/  disk12/  disk2/  disk4/  disk6/  disk8/  user/

but if i try to remove the directory in question, i get this:

root@unRAID:/mnt# rmdir disk6/unRAID/Movies/HD/Till

rmdir: failed to remove `disk6/unRAID/Movies/HD/Till': Read-only file system

excuse my inexperience in the command shell, but shouldn't i be able to do just about anything when logged in as root?

as root, yes you can do just about anything.

But not when the filesystem is read-only.

disk6 has corruption of the file system most likely.  Click the troubleshooting link in my sig and you should find some instructions about running reiserfsck on the disk to check it.

oops, just saw this now.

clicked on your troubleshooting link, skimmed over all the sections (without finding the reference to "reiserfsck"), then did a search of the page's text, without finding an instance of "reiserfsck"...finally googled "how to use reiserfsck" and went to this link:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/repairing-reiserfs-file-system-with-reiserfsck.html

then i ran "reiserfsck /mnt/disk6" to try to do just a default consistency check...it came back with:

Will read-only check consistency of the filesystem on /mnt/disk6

Will put log info to 'stdout'

Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to type Yes if you do):Yes

bread: Cannot read the block (2): (Is a directory).

reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2

bread: Cannot read the block (16): (Is a directory).

reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16

reiserfs_open: the reiserfs superblock cannot be found on /mnt/disk6.

Failed to open the filesystem.

If the partition table has not been changed, and the partition is

valid  and  it really  contains  a reiserfs  partition,  then the

superblock  is corrupted and you need to run this utility with

--rebuild-sb.

is this a safe thing to do? should i do anything else first or in addition?

thanks for helping blind me with where to go ;)

don't know how long this will take, but being a 2TB disk, it might be longer than i can still keep my eyes open tonight...will hit the sack and report back...oops, as i was typing that it added more info to the terminal window:

lemme see where the log for this went...stdout...well, couldn't find it, so i saved all the terminal output to a text file, zipped it and attached it.

although disk6 appears to be kinda fixed after all that (at least i hope, if only through some pretty massive data-loss), restarting the unRAID server now shows disk1 as being "unformatted"...what gives?

unRAID_after_reiserfsck.jpg.6329016c383e7d08737694311bb87863.jpg

an hour later, i did a refresh of the unRAID webGUI, and the array showed as having been stopped...when i started it, everything looked fine all of a sudden...hmmm.

and i still can't do anything on disk6 due to permission problems...can't delete or move files, and even doing a simple ls command came up with this:

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6/unRAID# ls

/bin/ls: cannot access Media: Permission denied

Media  Movies/

and "Media" isn't even a folder on that drive anymore (although there used to be an instance of it at some point in the past)...maybe the reiserfs check disk recreated it somehow?

after some more scouring through online tutorials on removing folders via terminal, i tried the following...as you'll see without success, as the file-system still shows as "read-only":

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6# cd unRAID

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6/unRAID# ls

/bin/ls: cannot access Media: Permission denied

Media  Movies/

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6/unRAID# cd Media

..what to do next?

  • Author

so if it keeps giving me "read-only filesystem" and "permission denied" errors, even after a reiserfs file-tree rebuild, does that mean that the drive is shot? my warranty replacement drive came in, so do i need to use it to replace this uncooperative 2TB drive, or can i upgrade one of my 1TB drives with it? if i use it to replace the complaining 2TB drive, can that faulty drive be re-used after a complete re-format/clearing/?

  • Author

anybody know what i should do next? disk6 still shows as "Read-only file system", and in my quote above you can see the Permission denied errors when i try to delete a folder with files i don't need anymore. Where to go from here?

i know i'm kinda talking to myself here now, but i am still stuck in the same place as i was a week ago...after i didn't hear anything back from the board, and looking at the fact that i still have three 1TB disks amongst my 13 disks (all others being 2TB), i ordered another 2TB drive to replace disk6 with, hoping that after the array rebuilt it, the "read-only file system" might maybe go away...but after dropping the new disk into its place this morning and waiting 7hrs to get the array rebuilt and back up, i get the same behavior as before...here's my terminal output:

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6/unRAID/Movies#

so even after a reiserfs tree-rebuild and complete exchange of the disk with a new one, i can still not move files onto that disk, delete them, or move them from one directory to their parent folder...what to do, what to do?

thanks for helping blind me with where to go ;)

looks like it's checking the drive now...in the Terminal so far:

root@unRAID:/mnt/disk6/unRAID/Movies# cd

root@unRAID:~# samba stop

root@unRAID:~# umount /dev/md1

root@unRAID:~# reiserfsck --check /dev/md6

reiserfsck 3.6.21 (2009 www.namesys.com)

It looks like you unmounted disk1 and then ran on disk6.

UnRaid restores a partition at the bit level. File system errors are not corrected by this process. Reiserfsck must be used to correct file system errors. Repeat the process. Umount the correct drive and run with the --check option and the follow the instructions that reiserfsck provides.
