December 21, 20223 yr So, upgraded my RAM and decided to risk a firmware update on my z690-i Asus motherboard to increase the odds the newer RAM would work. I remembered getting the machine to run headless wasn't easy. But, I did it once. Now that the machine lives in my crawlspace, im highly motivated to get it working again. Surely I can, right...? Problem is now that I'm having trouble getting the machine to boot headless as it was doing with the BIOS from a year ago. I have a feeling this has something to do with the UEFI settings. If I just let the machine post without intervention, it gets to the bios screen and then immediately proceeded by a black screen. If I enter the BIOS and manually select the UEFI USB drive to boot from, Unraid starts just fine. If I switch the boot security mode from Other OS to Windows UEFI I am prompted by a scary red Secure Boot Violation error instead of the black screen on next boot. Am I trying to enable or disable UEFI? Is there any way I can tell which path I chose a year ago by inspecting my usb drive with unraid on it?
December 21, 20223 yr Author That pesky Legacy USB Support needed to be disabled. Of course! So intuitive!
December 21, 20223 yr Author Spoke too soon. Auto booting successfully currently seems to be incredibly intermittent. (Rarely works) Mostly still just hangs on a black screen. Maybe I'll roll back to the old firmware where it definitely can function properly.
December 21, 20223 yr Author Oh boy and the ASUS firmware version I updated to cannot be rolled back from. Sigh. Just wonderful. I guess we plow ahead. Any ideas?
December 21, 20223 yr Author Fast boot betrayed me! I noticed that the 3 second BIOS flash screen was getting cut off in just a split second and we cut to the black screen. So, got me thinking maybe something was going haywire in the boot sequence as it tried to speed through initialization. Disabled fast boot and it's reliably booting headless 5/5. Yay!

Thank you for posting this. I also have an Asus z690 board (Prime version DDR4) and am having a very similar issue. I am not sure if it is exactly the same as yours (explanation below) but sometimes when I power on my system, I get the Asus logo for a second or so, and then black screen. I power off / on and sometimes it works fine. I am concerned it is the HBA I just added (9207-8i from theartofserver), and that is when the random boot issue seems to have started. Not sure it is related, or just coincidental. When Unraid does boot, everything looks great. The HBA is working, all disks are seen, etc. I definitely have to get this resolved though, as I want to be confident it will boot up whenever I reboot.

Itll get stuck posting, and the HBAs wont even spin up the disks. It outputs a HDMI signal, but doesnt post or display anything. BIOS reset generally fixes it, and it boots again... but thats a pain. HBAs are 2x 9300-16i's I wonder if this behavior is something to do with HBAs. Ill try to disable fast boot tonight.
January 14, 20233 yr Similar problem with z690 here. Disabling fast boot helps boot from usb reliably, but only when I’ve got a display connected. jburkardt did you have any luck?
