January 30, 200818 yr I'm in the process of building my first Unraid server. I've been browsing through these forums and noted a couple of issues that could affect my build. I am planning to use it only to store ripped DVDs and HDDVD/Blu-ray ISOs and enable playback from a single HTPC connected by a gigabit ethernet connection. 1. The MB I picked uses the Realtek 8110SC Gigabit Lan driver (I assume it uses the 8110SC chip but haven't yet received the board to verify). There seems to be issues with the Realtek driver in Unraid. Will these issues affect this application? Do I need to look into buying a different MB or use a PCI/PCI-E NIC card? 2. Vista. Have heard about read transfer speed issues. Will these issues affect this application? Any help would be appreciated.
January 30, 200818 yr There were several Realtek drivers, and I believe it was the 8111B driver in the last kernel that was buggy, not the one you are expecting, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't change motherboards just for that reason, as you can always add a cheap NIC temporarily, or use an older version of unRAID until 4.3 comes out. As to Vista, I believe that several users have reported that the Vista Service Pack 1 fixes the transfer speed problems.

February 2, 200818 yr Author Got my server up and running. I made the mistake of buying a motherboard that does not support a Celeron 420 without a bios upgrade. Had to rip a processor out of another box to do the bios update. RobJ was right. The 8110SC seems to plays nice with unRAID 4.2. I am seeing the Vista problem. File transfers to Vista using explorer are very slow ~1-3 MB/s. Doesn't seem to affect streaming performance? I'm streaming HD content and it is smooth based on limited testing. I'll be running some more tests over the weekend.
