Physically moving an Array Disk without causing a rebuild?

Featured Replies

I run a media server with a 5 HDD array and 2 SSD cache pool and also have a USB 3.0 5-drive docking station with 2 more HDDs in it.

I’d like to rationalise my array layout and move disks that are rarely used into the docking station and commonly used disks into the server where they can get the benefit of SATA speeds.

That would require me to switch a disk out of the server and into the docking station, and put the one from the docking station into the server.

Can I do this without triggering an array rebuild? I thought I could do a “New Config” with “Retain All” and then restart the array with “Parity Valid”.

Can anybody please advise if this would work?

Thanks

IF the docking station is "good" (i.e. fully transparent) you should not have to do anything since unraid goes by disk identifier.

Screenshot your main page before swapping, disable auto array start, do the swap, check everything's still right after booting again.

Note that USB is strongly discouraged for array drives.
