Disabled disk after reboot - what to do?

Featured Replies

Hello and happy new year!

i had to restart my server after a power failure at my home (the UPS did not seem to do its job but that another subject). Then i realized i had to manually start the array which typically starts automatically. When i did, i noticed one of my 2 data disks was disabled and the read check was paused at 0.0%. it sill is ~24 hours later.

i am not sure what to do. After reading a few thread here, i tried to start an Extented SMART test on the disabled disk but i does not seem to start... i attached the diagnostics files.

Does a disabled disk mean i have to replace it or can it be repaired?

Thanks for your guidance.

David

Simultaneous problems in 3 disks using 2 different controllers:

Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata3: found unknown device (class 0)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata3: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata2: found unknown device (class 0)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata4: found unknown device (class 0)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata4: softreset failed (device not ready)
Jan 1 18:41:02 Tower kernel: ata4: reset failed, giving up

This suggests some kind of PSU or cable problem, check as cables especially any power splitters, then post new diags after array start.

Thanks JorgeB.

I rechecked all cables including PSU and drives (unplugged, cleaned with a soft brush, re-plugged). This time, none of the disks of the array were discovered at startup! See picture and diagnostics files.

The PSU does make a significant buzzing sound and the server itself makes buzzing sounds that cycle repeatedly every 1-2 seconds. So i rebooted the server again. this second time it did not come online at all (web interface not available)...

i think i will order a new PSU and check again.

That's a good idea

So i plugged in the new PSU and the server started fine. no more buzzing sounds.

Disk 2 is still disabled. The reads, writes and errors counts on the Main page now show 0 each which was not the case before. I attached a screenshot and the new logs.

What would you recommend i do next?

OK. Data rebuild is ongoing. Pretty simple :)
