Diskfail. Change array and rebuild?

A week or two ago "Disk 5" died in the array. (Not parity).

Today I got a new Seagate Exos X18 18Tb to replace "Parity 1" as a late Xmas gift and to replace "Disk 5" with "Old Parity 1". I Also want to remove "Disk 7" and "Disk 8".

Example:

 Parity 1 ST18000NM000J-0000000_00000000 - 18 TB (sde) (NEW)
 Parity 2 ST18000NM000J-0000000_00000000 - 18 TB (sdg)
   Disk 1 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdk)
   Disk 2 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdm)
   Disk 3 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdc)
   Disk 4 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdh)
   Disk 5 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdl) (Old Parity 1)
   Disk 6 WDC_WD80EFZX -0000000_00000000 - 8 TB (sdi)

What would be the best/fastest/safest way?

After disk5 is replaced and the array is healthy again, you can set a new config without those disks and rebuild parity.

I can't think of a good safe way to accomplish everything at once, you need to be sure the array has one good parity check with zero errors before you remove any disks.

You did not mention it, but you will need to copy any data off these drives that you want to keep before removing them as Unraid will not do it automatically for you.    You can do this manually using something like the Dynamix File Manager plugin or with less manual intervention using the unBalance plugin.

@JorgeB @JonathanM @itimpi Thank you all!

If I understood you correctly after the preclear I'm running right now I will be able to take 8TB "Parity 1" away and then have two drives offline for the time being and add the new 18Tb as "Parity 1" and "OLD Parity 1" as a new "Disk 5" in one operation right? And when it's all done I could remove the 1Tb drives on a second operation.

I'm sorry I did not explain that I have unBalance that I will use to move all from "Disk 7" and "Disk 8" to other drives.

Not sure we are on the same page. Parity swap actually creates a duplicate of your parity drive as in interim step before rebuilding your data on the old parity drive, so technically for a portion of the procedure you have 2 copies of your parity drive.

Oh my bad then. I will re read that page a 3th time. I didn't really comprehend it all then.. i thought it wore more risky but then i understand you better now. Thank you for taking time to explain it. Then i can feel calm about it! I'm doing the preclean now so it will be a few days but that's just awesome!

On point 13. It says I should now get a "Copy" button but it's not there under "Array Operation". Both the new parity drive and the new "Disk 5" are both blue so I think I i've done everything the right way so far. All I have is a "Start" and the description "Start will start Parity-Sync and/or Data-Rebuild."

Am I missing something?
