July 17, 201114 yr I'm getting parity errors all of a sudden. This is the second time that this is happening in 1.5 months. The only change that I made was adding a PATA 320gb 7200rpm cache drive, installing Plex and upgrading to an AMD X2 250 from a Sempron 140. Attached is my syslog. Please check and help me diagnose the problem. Thanks! Update: After doing a powerdown and startup, my array status was "Stopped. New parity disk installed." The weird part is the size being reported under device status is going up. Currently at 382.63 TB and growing??? Using Simple Features 0.7 Update 2: Further examination of the syslog, I also get "program smartctl is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO" errors Update 3: I checked all the SATA cables and the cable on the parity drive was somewhat loose. I replaced the cable and did a parity rebuild. Completed successfully with no error. I then ran the mover script to move files from the cache and finished successfully. Currently running: unRAID 5.0-beta8d Biostar A760G M2+ AMS Athlon II X2 250 4GB Memory 6x 2TB 7200rpm HD 1x 320GB 7200rpm HD (PATA) Corsair HX Series CMPSU-520HX 520W Cooler Master Centurion 590 syslog-2011-07-17.zip
July 24, 201114 yr Author I thought I solved this issue but it came back two days ago. I removed my cache drive before I did a parity check thinking it is a power issue. Parity check completed with no errors but errors occurred in the syslog again today. I ran Smart Status report on my parity drive and although the SMART overall-health self-assessment test result returned as PASSED, it had a huge Raw_Read_Error_Rate. I will just replace the parity drive right now and do more test of the drive. ul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: cmd 25/00:b8:97:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 94208 in Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: res 51/40:57:e7:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: error: { UNC } Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 Jul 23 23:58:28 Frank-Server kernel: ata4: EH complete Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: cmd 25/00:b8:97:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 94208 in Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: res 51/40:57:e7:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: error: { UNC } Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 Jul 23 23:58:30 Frank-Server kernel: ata4: EH complete Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: cmd 25/00:b8:97:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 94208 in Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: res 51/40:57:e7:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: error: { UNC } Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 Jul 23 23:58:32 Frank-Server kernel: ata4: EH complete Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: cmd 25/00:b8:97:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 94208 in Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: res 51/40:57:e7:e7:a0/00:00:3b:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: error: { UNC } Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133 Jul 23 23:58:34 Frank-Server kernel: ata4: EH complete Attached is a syslog and smart status report of my parity drive. syslog-2011-07-24.txt Smart_info.txt

July 28, 201114 yr Author Thank you for replying. I'm still monitoring this issue and so far has not returned in two days. Out of desperation, I swapped my power supplies from the Antec earthwatts 500 to my Corsair HX Series CMPSU-520HX. I also replaced my parity drive with a WD Black and moved added my old parity drive back in as Disk 6. Making a lot of changes does not really help diagnose the current issue I always thought ATA4 meant my cache drive which is PATA. Thanks for explaining the Smart report. So as the drive gets worse, the VALUE will get lower and closer to the THRESH value?
