XBMC openelec or win7

Featured Replies

So looks like I have decided to build an HTPC, got a good deal on a shuttle xs35 and an ssd. Wondering if those of you who use xbmc, do you do a live install, openelec or on top of a win7 install. Would love to do it over win7 install so my GF can use it to browse the internet when I am not using it for streaming, or does the openelec install have a built in browser? Sorry am new to all this please help a brother out! Thanks

Honestly,

It is personal preference. You can try a live version and see if you like it. then try the win version.

You already gave a few good reasons to do the Win version.

1 the SSD for fastboot

2 the GF factor

3 new factor..

just make sure you get all the windows updates. update your directx to current and your flash (for lag-free youtube/netflix HD)

once you get it all updated, the ION will perform like a rock star when doing 1080P (I'm assuming you got the ION and not the GMA version)

I have always used the live version, but now I use the openelec distro.

It boots so fast from HDD, so when I go to a SSD it will be even faster.

Basically, if I turn the TV on and the box on at the same time, it beats the TV in starting.  Its about 20 seconds on hard drive.

If you are looking for an appliance type of device, then go with the openelec version.

Been using nightly build on win7 because I NEED wmv seek support, it crashes ALOT, like ALOT ALOT but somewhat functional.

of course if your interests run towards the pvr end of things, and especially if you want to record cable content (read ceton card), Win7 and MCE are your best alternative...
