Formated drive not empty

Featured Replies

Hi,

A quick question : why my drive aren't empty after unraid formated them?

After my first unraid build from scratch, the disks were unmountable after I assigned them to create an array (not yet formated from my previous system (truenas core)), so I got the format option, which I did. The drives are not empty and are using 29go, 7go and 14go. I haven't write any data to them.

The moment you format a drive you will lose something like 1-2% of the total size as the file system structures are created to hold directory type information.

Hi itimpi,

The used space represent 1 to 3% as you mentionned of the 1To (2x) and 2To.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm still surprise the empty structure used that much space (50go total), but I can live with that.

Just to add that this is filesystem depend, e.g., btrfs doesn't use basically any space compared with xfs since it started supporting reflinks.
