Unraid Server Locking Up - Unknown Reason

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all,

I am having an issue that I've been troubleshooting where my Unraid server will lock up and I can't pin down the cause. The only thing that appears to be consistent is that when I'm attempting to watch a movie on Emby, the server will lock up somewhere around the 20 minute mark... but this timeframe is inconsistent, usually somewhere between 15-30 min if I'm watching anything on a resolution above 1080-5Mb.

I just upgraded my HBA and Video Card (GPU) as I thought this may be part of the cause, but it just crashed again with the new hardware installed. I've enabled all logging/debug, but don't see any issues, so I'm at a loss here.

Any help, feedback, advice, etc. is greatly appreciated. I'm happy to provide additional details if requested. Diag. attached.

Thank you!

Unrelated, but your system share has files on the array. Perhaps you enabled Docker / VM Manager before you installed cache.

Thanks @trurl, I'll look into that and see about resolving that problem in case it's causing issues.

@trurl Thanks again. After further review, based on the articles you sent, I wanted to provide some updates.

Shares - I reviewed the shares and have reasons for why everything is configured the way it is. Specifically, what's pinned to cache is setup for speed of processing particular functions. It was good to review all the same, but I wanted you to know that it's configured as intended.

Memory - Based on the article you linked above, and with the help of a friend, I started digging into my memory. What we found was that one of the 4 DIMMs was not being recognized in the BIOS and Unraid. I'm not sure how or when this DIMM went missing from the system, but after reseating all 4 of them, they all came back online. I'm hopeful that this was the culprit and your article above is what put me on this path, so THANK YOU!

Overclock - I am overclocking the memory beyond what is supported (again thank you for the linked thread), but I've been running in this state for over 2 years with no issues until somewhat recently. Should the crashing persist, I'll drop the mem to the specs outlined per support.

I'll follow-up to let you know if the server remains stable after resolving the missing DIMM issue and if not, I'll provide additional specifics.

Thank you again!

That's why system share should be on cache. Your docker executable code is there.

@trurl is this what you're referring to?

I thought I already had it configured to be on cache. If I'm missing something apologies. Thanks again!

Prefer Cache means it will try to put new files on cache if they will fit, and it will try to move files from array to cache if it can.

Nothing can move open files. You have to disable Docker and VM Manager in Settings so these files won't be open, then run mover to get these moved.

Mover won't replace files so if any are already on cache you will have to figure out which to keep and delete the others.

On the User Shares page, click Compute... for the system share and it will show you how much of each disk is used by the share.

Install Dynamix File Manager plugin to work with files directly on the server.

@trurl sorry for the extended delay in response, had a lot going on in my personal life and just had a chance to invest some significant time working on this.

Here's where I am currently:

  • Replaced GPU
  • Replaced HBA and cabling
  • Upgraded/Flashed BIOS
  • Configured RAM in BIOS to stable standard

After all these changes however, one of my drives (Parity 2) is missing in UnRaid. The drive shows up on boot when the HBA does it's scan, but in UnRaid it's just not there at all. I have been having issues with this drive in UnRaid for quite a while, where I've had to remove and rebuild it quite regularly, but now it's just gone. Additionally, my server crashes for unknown reasons and when it crashes now, the whole server just shuts down, it doesn't hang like it used to.

I've attached an updated diag file for review. I'm really at a loss on this one and any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
