Can't boot Unraid - can boot anything else

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I installed Unraid on an older USB to try it out. It works great and I'm planning to buy a license so I purchased a new USB stick for it (2 actually).

My problem is that my HP Microserver Gen8 (with latest BIOS) simply won't boot Unraid using these new drives.

Interestingly when I install anything other than Unraid (e.g. Ventoy) on these drives I can boot without an issue.

Is there anything I can change on the USB drives so I can boot Unraid?

(The BIOS has very limited USB settings and I've tried all of them without any luck)

Thanks!

Are you trying to boot using legacy (CSM) boot or UEFI boot?    For UEFI boot you need to ensure the EFI folder on the flash drive has no trailing ~ (tilde) character.

I'm trying with UEFI.

The old USB key boots in UEFI. The new ones can't, neither in UEFI or in legacy.

I forgot the mention the old drive is 16Gb the new ones are 32Gb.

Try reformatting the new USB sticks with RUFUS, then follow the normal install instructions.

Thank you! I managed to boot from one of the problematic USB keys.

In case someone else is facing similar issues my solution was:

- Format the USB stick with Rufus - as Suggested by @JonathanM (I used the settings shown in the attached screenshot)

- I took backup of my current, working USB drive (Using the Unraid WebUI: Main -> Flash -> Flash backup)

- I copied the files from the backup zip file onto the new drive without overwriting anything on the new drive (there were some file generated by Rufus after the format)

Thanks again for the help!
